Re: Remington R3442
Price & Zalesky's says 3 1/4", equal end Jack, black composition. Could be more in Sargent's but it's past my bedtime, hope this helps.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Re: Remington R3442
Houston Price's GUIDE shows a "2" last pattern number as always "black composition" or "slick black". The R-3442 is listed as black composition.
That material can look a lot like ebony. I just went through 10 pages of Remington patterns and there are no ebony handles and no pattern number for ebony. The only wood listed is cocobolo and that is "8". It's a nice looking knife. Just passing on some reference info. Good luck. J.O'.

Re: Remington R3442
Thank you very much J.O. it’s much appreciated the info you provided. This is my first Remington. Do you have an idea if all these models were etched? I seen a picture of a catalog online has an etch but I someone told me all were not etched, so you have an idea if that’s true?Ridgegrass wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 7:34 pm Houston Price's GUIDE shows a "2" last pattern number as always "black composition" or "slick black". Re: Remington R3442
Don't think all Remmy's were etched. The etch gets worn off often but changing the light angle or intensity can reveal the remains of an etch. Too much cleaning and polishing can wreck an etch. Good luck. J.O'.
Re: Remington R3442
Thank you, I just hope it wasn’t etched to begin with. I am being told it has never been used/sharpened and never cleaned. I’d find out once I get hopefully, only thing it has no snap either blade so if I get that fixed it’ll be a great piece. Thanks again J.O.Ridgegrass wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 2:52 pm Don't think all Remmy's were etched. Re: Remington R3442
No snap on either blade is not a good thing, especially if it has never been used or sharpened. How can that be?Clark23 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 7:25 pmThank you, I just hope it wasn’t etched to begin with. I am being told it has never been used/sharpened and never cleaned. Re: Remington R3442
I guess someone could have opened and closed it 100 times without oiling the joints?

The joints might just need cleaned and oiled.

Re: Remington R3442
Very interested to hear about it when you finally receive it.
I just went through the entire Remington catalog and all the knife pattern numbers ending in "2" are specified as "black composition" and all the ones ending in "1" are redwood. Those ending in "8" are cocobolo. There are no knives listed as ebony or black wood, or any other wood. This catalog is a reprint listing and describing the handle material for all the patterns from R-1 through R-9003. I'm not claiming anything here, just trying to clarify the info. If anyone has an ebony Remington of any pattern, please post it. My source is Houston Price's "OFFICIAL PRICE GUIDE TO COLLECTOR KNIVES" tenth edition, 1991, pp.478-505. I assume this list includes only the original Remington's made before the cessation of knife production around 1940. Maybe Mr. Price is mistaken or maybe the so-called "Remington's" later reissued by other makers changed the pattern numbers? I only have one of the remakes and it's a delrin scout folding hunter , I think by Camillus. Thanks for any light shed on this subject. J.O'."

Re: Remington R3442
Gentlemen,
I'm glad to hear that there is an ebony Remington. My original concern was the fact that a list of 900 knives by Houston Price does not include one mention of ebony in any knife pattern ending in "2". That just seems very odd. Certainly not looking for an argument, not my intention at all, just showing what I found. Here's a copy of the description for the R-962. If there is an ebony model, that's great. I simply saw the original post, it started me doing some research and that's what I found. It's all good. J.O'.

It’s ok, we are always learning something new as we go on. We will never know it all. Thank you for helping, J.O.Ridgegrass wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 10:01 pm Gentlemen,

Re: Remington R3442
Sargents 3rd edition ,Page 262 ,equal. Ends ,R 3442,black 3 1/4 Sargents 3rd edition page 242 under heading ( Remington pattern numbers )list the number 2 as the handle material black composite. Not surprised that the black composite. Looks and feels so much like ebony wood .Remington DuPont had some of the best chemist in the world working for them .

Re: Remington R3442
Just for the sake of clarity, can someone post a good, close-up pic of an ebony REMINGTON handle,(like the Maher and Grosh in the pic below), or a copy of a catalog description that states ebony as the material. I'm certainly no authority and I'm not doubting, I just haven't found one. When a reference to "black" is made, I think of "rough" or "smooth" or "slick" black because the various woods used are generally named. Thanks. J.O".
