Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?

Saw a UP coal train with a leased BNSF loco. One other item of note, there was an old Chicago & Northwestern car that came rolling by. Considering the company was out of business by 1995, the paint was in relatively good shape.

I think it was a Hudson they said cruised along at 120 mph! And an aluminum accented Mohawk and tender could be pushed by 2 men. I found this video to be very informative, glad you liked it too, David.

Here's a vid I made last night of a Lionel New York Central Hudson I just picked up on the cheap from trainz.com.



The engine moved like it had been doused with glue at first, a little greasing of the gears and some run time loosened it up. The tender had a broken coupler and the water scoup had come loose. Took a coupler/truck off of a flatbed car and it worked perfectly, the water scoup was easily put back in place. This engine was made by Lionel/MPC between 1972-1975 and probably sat boxed up for the last 45+ years, maybe because the coupler was broken and no one took the time to fix it?

When they were using steam engines in Europe there were most always two big "plates" right at the front and on each side of the engine. Sort of like blinders on a horse. I had never seen them in the U.S but they are shown in the video around the 5 minute mark. Do you know what the purpose of these was?

Those are smoke shields/deflectors, QS. Some U.S. engines had them but most didn't. They were used to help engineers' visibility. I think most American engines were built with steam-powered smoke lifters inside the stack. U.P., New York Central and Great Northern used smoke deflectors on some engines where speed increased their effectiveness.

I am gobsmacked. Have never seen Duplex engines before. Fantastic design. Were these used? Mr. Lowey is a giant. I would have guessed these came out of an Italian design shop.
