Birds - personal observations
Re: Birds - personal observations
Those are some nice photos of the hawk nestlings, Doglegg. It is amazing how fast they, and most birds, mature. I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings here, but those young chicks are just ugly. (Please send the vituperation by private message, so as to not mess up the thread.)

I can't argue with you Mel. Their mom thinks they are pretty.Dinadan wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 9:51 pm Those are some nice photos of the hawk nestlings, Doglegg. Great pictures of the hawks, Floyd. Very enjoyable.
Re: Birds - personal observations
Thank you QS.
Re: Birds - personal observations
Checked on the hawks this morning. They seemed a little sleepy. There was an awfully brave squirrel. Also ran into a great white egret.

Re: Birds - personal observations
Nice pics, Mr. Floyd, really like the one of the Fox Squirrel above the nest.

Thanks QS and Ike.
Re: Birds - personal observations
This red tailed hawk has been hanging around lately and finally him got with a camera.

Steve, those are some very nice pics that you have posted, hope to see more.
BTW, I checked the bark and leaves on the tree in your pictures, and compared to those in Floyd's pics. I thought that maybe you had slipped down to Texas to find "his" nest and get some pics.

Very good shots of that Redtail. Steve. It is kind of strange, but I note that we have been here almost the same length if time, made almost the same number of posts, and are almost the same age.

Great pics Steve!
Ike, it would be nice to have Steve visit for a while.
Thanks Mel.

That tree is a walnut, what version i can't say. I assumed American walnut but that may be wrong. All I know is the mower doesn't like runnin' over the walnuts when they drop. And raking them sucks.
Thanks for the kind words guys. I got lucky, they usually won't stand still for me.
Dinadan, that makes us both old.

It's beginning to look as if page 21 of this thread should be called the RT Hawk page, saw this one this morning.

Great pics Ike.
Re: Birds - personal observations
Temp in the 90's today had this Starling panting, and I thought it made a good picture of a much maligned species.

Re: Birds - personal observations
Not a greatly loved bird Ike but good pic of the hot little fellow.
Fresh pics of the Red-shouldered juveniles. And some adults and a Yellow Crowned Night Heron. And a butterfly so they will have something to eat.

Those are awesome pictures, Joe. I don't know that.much about Night Herons, is it unusual to see them out in the open like that? What.few timea I have seen them, they were in brushy areas and hard to spot, but noisy, which gave them away.
Great photos!
Great photos!

Re: Birds - personal observations
Ike, this one was quite brazen. Most here are bashful but this one was standing in the middle of a public park.
Re: Birds - personal observations
Just about walked right by this guy this morning, happened to see him as I was about 30' away. He was very gracious about posing, and never did fly.

Re: Birds - personal observations
Wow Ike, what a great experience! Love the owls and that one is magnificent.
Re: Birds - personal observations
That is a great set of photos, Doglegg. The adult Red-shouldered Hawk is my favorite, but that Heron is also very nice.
Ike - nice Starling and Red-tailed Hawk. But the Barred Owl is just great. I have seen Barred Owls several times in my life, but the sightings are not common at all for me.. The owls are actually pretty common in swamps in my area. I have seen two this spring this spring, but no good photos. I love to hear them calling, and I have been lucky enough to hear one or more the last couple of times I went kayaking. Thanks for sharing those great photos.
