I'm always interested in finding good reading material. Read any good books lately that you'd like to recommend?
I'm currently reading:
CREATING A LEAN CULTURE, by David Mann
http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Lean-Cul ... 343&sr=8-1
and
STRESSFIRE, by Massad Ayoob
http://www.amazon.com/Stressfire-Vol-Gu ... 373&sr=1-1

So you're more of a research & facts reader? Not into cheap trashy novels? :)

Edit: I guess I should have added, I'm currently trying to wade my way through 'CRAZY HORSE & CUSTER, The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors". It's not bad but it's slow going and I'd rather be reading Lee Child's latest Jack Reacher novel, 'The Affair'.

Yep, I tend to read mostly nonfiction: technical stuff, how-to stuff, knife books, history, Guns, cars, biographies, etc.
I do stray into fiction from time to time, like the Arkady Renko Russian detective novels by Martin Cruz Smith.
Also, I like Hemingway, a little by Steinbeck, and anything by Ayn Rand.

I just finished reading(for the 2nd time) a book about the famous explorer John Charles Fremont called "Dream West" (it was made into a 5 part mini-series several years ago). A fictionalized(but based on fact)account of his life mapping the West in the 1840's and 50's and his life in California and unsuccessful run for president just before Abrahan Lincoln.A great(but long;it's over 700 pages)read about a great man.
I am starting "A Pirate Looks At Fifty" by Jimmy Buffett now.I have a couple of his books but never read them.
One of my favorite authors is Julian May;one of the few female science fiction writers and a very prolific one.She creates whole societies in her books that sometimes run through five or six books in the manner of a not so famous 1930's SF writer named Olaf Stapleton.
Another of my favorite writers is the late Douglas Adams whose most famous book was,"A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" which was made into a movie. That was one book of a five part trilogy(his description)that had to be one of the greatest series ever.He also did a series called,"Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" in the manner of the Mickey Spillane books.
Another great author who is mostly known for his irreverent country songs, his endless runs for the governorship of Texas and many appearances on Don Imus' show is Kinky Friedman.I'm sure TJ has heard many of his songs but many don't know he has written quite a few books as well.
One book that was given to me many years ago when I was going through a particularly rough period(health issues;a messy divorce among other things)was a tome called,"If You Meet the Buddha on the Road;KILL HIM!" by a psychotherapist named Sheldon Kopp. It turned my life around. That's all I will say about that one;if you're interested;go find a copy.I gave all of mine away to people I thought needed them.
Anyway that is my short list. I've been getting back to reading lately.Started before I went to school and when I was in my 30's was reading sometimes 3 books at a time.Haven't done that for awhile.

Mitch - Looks like we share some of the same interests in authors. If you can find them, I highly recommend the Matthew Scudder series by Lawrence Block. Very easy to read. I would compare him somewhat to Michael Connelly only IMO better.

K7K - Of the several he's written, the only one I've read by Jimmy Buffett is "A Pirate Looks At Fifty" . I'll be interested to get your take on the book.

If anyone hasn't read Stieg Larsson's trilogy, it's also recommend and it's one that should be read in sequence.

ahhh yes, Jimmy Buffett. I read TALES FROM MARGARITAVILLE and WHERE IS JOE MERCHANT.
His books are like his songs - light and airy, kind of shallow. A fun escape.

I used to enjoy Lewis Grizzard for the same reasons.

8) Hey Jerry, if you have read any of Lee Child's Books, can you believe they are turning "One Shot" into a movie, casting that pip squeek Tom Cruise as 6 ft 5 Jack Reacher? ::uc:: That's a real deal breaker for me! ::td::

Mitch I've read all the Lee Child books except the current two. Tom Cruise doesn't work for me either. ::td:: ::td:: ::td:: I'm not sure who I would cast as Jack Reacher. If Tommy Lee Jones were taller and a bit younger I can see him playing the part. How about Liam Neeson? Ahh but he's almost 60 years old. There's a couple of candidates but I can't bring 'em up in the brain housing group right now.

I have one problem with the books. A Brit writing about the American military gets it very very wrong now and then. Child needs a technical advisor or a better researcher.

Yeah, he might do. Depends on how good he is as an actor. Ahh but they didn't ask us so we're probably stuck with Top Gun.

I like cooking, among many other things, and I am always looking for good instructional books.
This is one I'm currently reading.

The Russell Shorto book I read a few years ago now, but remember it as a great read. So I recomend that for you history lovers. While not true history, it's an accurate story.

Currently re-reading Louis L'amour westerns as my go-to-bed reading.

The last "serious" book I read was Empire of the Summer Moon, by S C Gwynne. a really good history of Quanah Parker and the Comanches. Really, REALLY well-written and researched.

I read most of Louis L'amour's books in college. It was a nice break from textbooks. Now I read knife related material and science fiction when I can find a good writer that I haven’t read all of their stuff. I don’t read fantasy or dragons, just ‘hard sci fi.’
I also read theologically based works from time to time. One of my favorite writers is Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Growing up without electricity I learned to read. Reading, working and hunting were my main forms of entertainment as a kid.
