I read “Cambodian Odyssey” for a class in the early 1990’s
Liked it so much I’ve read it again several times - tragedy upon tragedy, yet somehow inspiring.

Just finished this. Great! Rogers could zing anybody and still be friendly. He could be on TV or radio today and be right up to date, never hostile or belligerent but direct and very effective. May be the only statue of a non-"gubment" person in the capitol statuary. J.O'.

I have that book here somewhere. Great read, and much of what he said is appropriate today. If you ever have a chance the museum at his home near Claremore, OK (near Tulsa) is worth seeing.Ridgegrass wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 10:52 pm Just finished this. Great! KEN: I'd love to see that museum. I went to artillery school at Ft. Sill, saw Geronimo's cell and Medicine Bluffs, climbed Mt. Scott, and nearly got trampled by an irate buffalo. My fault, I thought they were docile like cattle and I walked up to a group to snap a picture ! Did some fancy broken field sprinting that day.
Maybe I'll get back there to Oklahoma one day. Thanks. J.O'.

Love the museum there in Claremore and also the Davis Gun Museum. Worth the trip.Mumbleypeg wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 11:08 pmI have that book here somewhere. Fort Sill is a great visit as well. Lots of military and Indian history.Ridgegrass wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 1:19 pm KEN: I'd love to see that museum. I went to artillery school at Ft. Okay, Ken (and anyone else who may wish to chime in). I need you to peruse your library and recommend a non-fiction western.
I know you enjoy Tom Clavin, but I have "Dodge City", "Tombstone", and "Wild Bill."
Sooooo....whatcha got?

Steve, here are some recommendations. (Not in any particular order).Steve Warden wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 12:48 pm Okay, Ken (and anyone else who may wish to chime in). I need you to peruse your library and recommend a non-fiction western.

Non-fiction Western history
I just got the Clavin book on Daniel Boone so recommendation is with the reservation - I haven’t read it yet. It’s new so only available in hard cover at this time.
Historical fiction - these are novels that stick pretty much to the facts but contain fictional dialog and in some cases some fictional characters. Lords of the Plain contains the best prose descriptions of the Llano Estacado I’ve read, and a good story too.

Re: What's Currently on Your Reading List?
Excellent! Thank you so much!!
I found "Empire of the Summer Moon" at a thrift store. It was a fantastic read.
I'll look at the rest, see what I can find at www.abebooks.com and go from there.
Thanks again, Sir!

Re: What's Currently on Your Reading List?
I’m about 2/3 through Hard Country by Michael McGarrity. It’s a novel woven around several historical events. The main characters are fictional but the secondary characters are historical figures of mid-to-late 19th century Texas and New Mexico. Pretty good read. I’m enjoying comparing the author’s story to on-line accounts of the actual events and characters.

My hard cover book of Unintended Consequences got chewed on by dogs at the old house.
My sister got me a paperback version recently and that is what I'm reading.

I’m very much enjoying this one. Puts a whole new perspective on the settling of the American West. Excellent read!

Re: What's Currently on Your Reading List?
Good stuff Dave. I'm currently reading an anthology of short stories by Neil Gaiman. Have read some Card novels and Scalzi as well but tend toward Heinlein, Azimov, etc. I don't mind re-reading books.
Regarding non-fiction American west books, recently finished "Life among the Apaches" by John C. Cremony. A personal journal of experiences as a member of the boundary commission surveys in the 1850's and as an officer in the California Volunteers 10 years later. First published in 1868. Good read.

Steve, I'd like to suggest "The Lakeside Press" publications. Smallish books. Check them out.

Re: What's Currently on Your Reading List?
Had not heard of that series Joe, thanks for the recommendation. I'll look into them.
Some of the old west fiction can be a good read. I'm partial to the Larry McMurtry series of "Berrybender" novels. Set in the mountain man era.

These just came in from Abe Books. They're used, but still in great condition. "Roughing It " was a recommendation from an article in "True West" magazine. The other two come by a recommendation from Ken.
I'll finish up "The Key-Lock Man" by Louis L'amour, then delve into one of these.

Re: What's Currently on Your Reading List?
Steve I’m sorry I didn’t come back on here sooner to say I found Blood and Treasure a disappointment. As I said in my previous post, I had not read it yet. I’ve read other works by Clavin and enjoyed them, but this one not so much. Maybe it’s the co-author’s influence. I’ll be interested to know what you think of it though.Steve Warden wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:13 pm These just came in from Abe Books. They're used, but still in great condition.
