We pull each other's chain every chance we get. I told her I wanted her newborn son to become a Marine and she said he was already too smart to become a crayon eater (at 2 months old). Re: what do ya'll look like?
Well that's a new one on me. Had to look it up, guess I don't get out much and keep up with all the latest crap. "Crayon eater" is pretty lame, back in the day we exchanged pleasantries by referring to the Navy guys as "swabbies" and "anchor crankers" , Army was referred to as "doggies" and the Air Force were known as "wing wipers". They kindly referred to us as "Jarheads", "Leathernecks", "Sea going Bellhops" and sometimes "Gyrines". It was always popular to "bark" when encountering enlisted Army personnel.
Some of y'all remember the "old Salts" who spoke of times "back in the Old Corps" or they prefaced their words with "Back in '03"......Some of us could be in that club by saying, "Back in '64"........

I'm glad to see that interservice rivalry is still alive and well. I respect all branches of the military but it's fun gigging each other now and then. BTW boot, for me it was "back in '62................. Goodness sakes. Now that is "the Old Corps".treefarmer wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 4:10 am Well that's a new one on me. Re: what do ya'll look like?
We have a younger guy at church who was a Marine and did a few Afghanistan tours with the Corps. According to him the crayon eating thing had something to do with the taste of their MRE's, when they actually had them.treefarmer wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 4:10 am Well that's a new one on me. Re: what do ya'll look like?
Well.... "crayon eater" (for me at least)... goes all the way back to elementary school days..... We also had "paste eaters" in those days. As I recall, that paste we had (we were too young to be trusted with actual glue) had a peppermint smell. Maybe that was why the urge to taste it was so strong. Certain paste eaters would actually open the can and show you HOW GOOD it was..YUMM.....LOL.treefarmer wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 4:10 am Well that's a new one on me. You could always tell the difference between the crayon eaters and the paste eaters when they smiled.....

Ferg, the only crayons I ever ate were onboard Port Hueneme Seabee Base in the mess hall. Worst chow of my enlistment.

Re: what do ya'll look like?
Speaking of chow, some of the best I had was whipped up by a few Army gents they sent along with us Buzz Boys on an exercise from Germany to England. It was an Air Force mission, but for whatever reason they sent along the those guys for our KP. Fantastic chow!
Guess that's the difference between the Army and the Air Force when it comes to cooking.
In the Army it's a "Get To", those guys choose to become cooks because they want to.
In the Air Force it's a "Have To", those guys are the ones who chose Open General and allowed the AF to put 'em where the AF needed 'em...in the chow hall! It was also a place for those who washed out of their chosen AFSC but still had to serve their enlistment.
Very seldom do you get good food from someone who doesn't really want to cook.

Re: what do ya'll look like?
I never got to eat Air Force chow but I've heard it's very good.
That said, I was stationed on a Navy base, Army base and of course, Marine Corps bases. Chow at our mess hall on Port Hueneme Seabee Base was baaad. Chow at the mess hall on Ft. Bliss Army Base was really good. Best I had during my enlistment. Chow in Marine Corps mess halls was fine. I had a few bad meals but overall I don't have any bad memories of the food they served to us.

Funny you should say that. A prime example is my grandson. He enlisted FOR a Culinary Specialist (92G) MOS. He wanted to cook. I don't know how much cooking he has actually done because when he got to Ft. Riley, KS he spent as much time at the Motor Pool as he did in the chow hall. He made SP-4 at 20 months TIS after he got to Korea and two months later they "promoted" him to Corporal E-4 so I'm not sure what he's doing right now. He's a man of few words and I occasionally get a text from him if I initiate the conversation. I guess I could keep up better if I would follow him of Face Book.Steve Warden wrote: ↑Thu Jul 23, 2020 12:48 pm Speaking of chow, some of the best I had was whipped up by a few Army gents they sent along with us Buzz Boys on an exercise from Germany to England. Re: what do ya'll look like?
Crayon Eaters, hmm ,been awhile since I’ve heard that one. The chow halls in the Army weren’t bad ,at least at Ft. Campbell.,but at Ft. Leonard Wood ,not so. When Deployed we had 28 days of C Rats then 4 days at base with hot chow.after 28 days of C rations , almost anything tasted good .The banter between branches was a good way to harmlessly blow off steam, most of the time. Oh and should be getting a pic of the boss and myself out this weekend. My wife has been schooling me on taking photos and getting them in Computer,so now just got to re read how to post those pics and then done deal. Have a good one out there. Thanks. JP
