Not one but two Piliated Woodpeckers. Bighomer, I have little envy in me but in this case I will make an exception. The Lord will understand.

Actually the second time they both showed up at the same time but the first time on the same pole, they got into a squabble just after I snapped a couple of photos. Don't know if they are mates or not. ::handshake::

Went to see the folks for Mother's day and bring them a 50 bag of bird seed and more jelly. Dad's pretty much stuck in the house on oxygen but at least the Orioles and other birds are back and baseball is on tv. Starting to think I need some bird feeders at our place. Sorry for my camera. Getting time for a new phone.

I stepped outside yesterday morning and was startled by a Black Vulture taking off from the roof of our barn. Then noticed several more roosting on our neighbor's fence and out buildings. I don't mind Turkey Vultures, but these guys give me the creeps. I remember seeing them at Ft. Polk in LA but they were never up close.

This is the first year I've had Red-Winged Blackbirds take up residence here. I like their "liquid" sounding songs.

I enjoy our White-Capped Sparrows, finding them much more handsome than the usual House Sparrows.

As a youngster I had a lot of animals. Among them were a ton of Chickens, a few Turkeys & a hand full of Pigeons. ::tu:: :D I also had some Chickens over here for a while. ::nod:: Problem is, I get attached to them and can't eat them but they don't lay many eggs when they get older. ::doh::

Encountered this juvenile turkey buzzard on the floor, just inside the doorway of an old barn on a farm property in Missouri. Not having a dedicated camera with me, I still was able to get close enough to grab these two snapshots with my phone, but this youngster was not particularly happy to see me get so close, as evidenced by his puffing himself up and by the look in his eye...
There were no siblings around, nor the mama bird, and methinks he may have fallen out of the nest, upstairs in the barn loft.
I returned a couple days later to visit him again, but he was solid gone; not a feather to be found...

For folks that don't know it, owls will attack purple martin nests and eat the birds.

Had an online friend who posted that she had set up a bunch of owl nesting boxes in an effort to lure some owls in.

She was successful. So successful, in fact, that the purple martin colonies that she had been nurturing for several years were destroyed within a few weeks of the owls starting to live in the area.

An example of the law of unintended consequences.

I have an Oriole with a sweet tooth. Raiding the humming bird feeder. I hadn't seen any hummies yet and had been wondering where the sugar water was going. Caught in the act.

Mr. Oriole was back again this morning, but the feeder was empty. Hummies did visit yesterday.
Have more nectar cooling. I frequently had goldfinches last summer also.

I took some drastic action because I was being overrun by Grackles and Mourning Doves. I cut off all bird food even tho I knew the risk of losing more desirable species. So, the Cardinals have remained as have abundant Robins. Next step is to return to feeding and see if I can avoid the excessive eaters.

Feral cat, should be administered with a Lead Sleeping Pill. They do untold damage over here to our native bird and mammal population. :x ::td::
