Re: Wood Lathe
I made up these two walnut pocket watches the other day. Did something a bit different on these two. I found a local coin shop that had some "replicoins" they were selling cheap. They are realistic replicas of old gold coins. They are bronze with a very thin gold plating. Manufacturers can do this if they stamp "COPY" deeply into the metal on the back. People collect these because the real gold coins would be worth a fortune.

I found some Morgan silver dollar replicoins and decided to try a coca bola pocket watch with one inset into the back.

It's been a little cooler in the garage here the last few days, so I got caught up on some turning projects.

Re: Wood Lathe
My latest project(s). My old High School buddies all live in the country and have fire pits. I was looking around for a longer poker (currently just using a straight piece of rebar) but couldn't find anything I liked.
I had some small ash trees that I cut down last year drying in the corner of the shop and some rebar, so I decided to make my own fire poker, and one for my buddies as well. I turned the trees on the lathe to make the handles, then sharpened and bent the rebar into a couple of different shapes until I decided on the shepherds hook bend. After I made the first one, I built a little jig to hold the round handle steady while I carved the name into it. I put a couple of coats of stain on to highlight the letter, then back on the lathe to sand it lightly. Two coats of poly on the wood handle, and a coat of tung oil on the rebar to keep it from rusting. Then added a leather lanyard. I think they will like these.
Heck, what guy wouldn't like a longer poker?

Re: Wood Lathe
Man , some beautiful work in this thread ! I bought a metal lathe some years ago and keep toying with the idea to turn wood on it as I don’t have room for another lathe . Most say that’s a bad idea , and most likely is , but I can’t help to be tempted looking at the beautiful stuff you guys are doing .
Re: Wood Lathe
I haven't been using the lathe that much this year. While visiting my friends ranch back in Feb. I gathered some pieces of mesquite he had knocked over to make a shooting range. I rough turned a bowl back then to give to them and have been letting it dry in my shop for the last few months. I finally decided to finish it this week, and will give it to them this weekend.

Re: Wood Lathe
Beautiful grain on the mesquite. That’s some tough wood, I’ve cleared plenty of it off to know what it does to a chainsaw.

Re: Wood Lathe
Quite a bit cooler here today, so I had the Jet mini lathe running and made a few pens. Skinny pens. fat pens, cigar pens, and baseball bat pens. Mostly one piece local walnut except for one walnut with maple wedding band.

Re: Wood Lathe
Nice work UNK and Old Cutler.
Like the bowl with the natural defects .
Love the pens I have never tried to make pens.
Here a few item I have made.
The little table fits next to a lounge chair. Good to put coffee bear and remote on.
The middle are biscuit or cookie barrels
The outer bowl in 20 inches the inside is 11 inches

Re: Wood Lathe
I am making a shop mallet for my friend from some mesquite from his ranch. The wood is full of Mesquite Borer Beetles. This one is has already turned into a beetle, but the larvae are really juicy when you hit them.
