Griptilian

I have a few knives that I suppose are technically "tactical", but none like this one.
This knife is real tactical. I'm impressed. Glad I didn't get the mini version. (never really thought about it) Releasing the Axis Lock on this thing allows you to flip the blade open or closed with ease.
I just got it so I haven't put my own edge on it yet and haven't used it to speak of. I haven't figured out what to clip it to. If I put it in my front pocket it's in the way.
It's hard to ignore these knives. I like it.

Nice pick up Joe....I really like the 154CM steel Benchmade uses on the Grip...takes and holds an edge real well. And I like the little thumb ramp on top of the blade too, great working knife.

Benchmade is a awesome company and Les de Asis is a great guy!
When it comes to the man's character and his knife sense, I put him in the same league as Al Mar!

I have a Mini-Grip & love it! Benchmade's 154CM holds an edge much better than my Spyderco Endura with VG-10 steel. IMO it is one of the top 3 or 4 knife steels for the way I use my knives.
The Axis Lock is in a league by itself. I think it is my favorite knife locking system!

Next I want to try a Benchmade 710 with CPM D2 steel. ::drool:: ::drool::

Thanks Dale.
It's nice to hear positive comments from a guy who knows knives.
I know very little about steel but this lock is terrific.
The 710 looks like a winner too. Compared to my 551 it's a little thinner, a little longer and a bit heavier. You can get a belt sheath for it too.
I think that would be a good way to carry mine ....... some how.

first grip was so smooth I could hold it at an angle & when depressing axis lock the blade would close by itself. grips have been a huge success for bench & rightly so. light weight with good alloys & a superp smooth locking system. in general I've found bench pays much more attention to heattreats than spyderco.their blades in 154 & d2 out perform most of spyderco. I really love the doug ritter grip in m390 which really is a super steel, but all of my benchs have really performed great. HiPower

The 551 is a great knife and took all the years and variations pickin' the best attributes for the Griptillian keeping it at around a $100. The only 2 complaints I had were the placement of the lanyard hole, I think it seemed like more of an afterthought and that was the easiest way to put one in after they'd already set up for production. The other thing is the pattern on the scales, it's great if you don't use the pocket clip and you want a nearly slip proof grip. Them little diamond points give excellent purchase. On the other hand they tear up pockets something unbelievable. I took sand paper to the scales to smooth them down a little which made it so much more pocket friendly and it still provides a great grip.

Here's mine with my original Benchmade Black and Purple 730 Ares.

Nice knife for sure.
I think 1/4 of the world likes them. Maybe just a few folks less than that...

I have a bunch of knives with pocket clips that I carry as beaters, and I found the best way for me to carry them is on my belt.
I tuck them inside my belt (outside the pants) between my spine, and hip, and I never feel them at all during the day.
In fact I've gotten so used to having one there that I wear a modified holster after work in the same spot so that the muscle memory thing is not disappointed when I reach for a knife in the evening.

I am constantly working in tight spaces, and my biggest peeve is something either getting caught on a belt item or something poking me every time I move. Inside the belt works.
