You gut that exactly right John and those two are just what I like when at work.Other than work I'm with Jerry and the speedsafe models are great but not around welding dust and grit. For me Speedsafe are more comfortable to deploy than autos.

8) Benchmade AFCK ::tu::

The AFCK was designed by former Navy SEAL Chris Caracci in collaboration with Benchmade.
It also used the Spyderco trademark hole in the blade, and I think Benchmade had to pay Spyderco for using it under a license agreement.

It's a Benchmade/Chris Caracci AFCK (“AFCK” stands for “Advanced Folding Combat Knife.”) There are many variations of this knife with a variety of super steels of the day that were made. This is a highly sought after knife and if you've ever used one, it's the most well thought out, superbly balanced multi grip combat knives designed by a man who wrote the course on CQC with a knife. I have yet to handle a faster, better balanced more ergonomic folder designed. Enjoy the knife, it's definitely a keeper, you'll see. :)

Pair of Zero Tolerance flippers, these are really heavy duty knives. The larger one is best suited for coat pocket carry, the smaller one I carry in the side pocket of carpenter jeans. Both came scarry sharp, but I'm not sure the best way to sharpen Elmax steel.

Warren Thomas/Beretta, Gen1 Avenger, laminated VG-10 Carbon Fiber blade with CF scales. The laminated blade is similar in design to the laminated Apache Helicopter rotor blades.

Glad to see this thread taking off, great looking knives too. Believe it or not I don't have any Spydercos but I'm partial to Zero Tolerance and Benchmades. Thanks for posting your knife, TheMadHungarian, really interesting design. ::tu:: ::tu::

My tactical knives have been previously posted, back in 2016. Nothing new purchased since then. These three remain my most commonly carried tacticals.

Ever since this thread first appeared, I've been asking myself and others "What constitutes a 'Tactical' knife"? Having not received a satisfactory answer but still being curious, I thunk and I thunk and from casual observation in both this thread and on the Internet, I came up with my own definition.

Jerry D.'s definition of a 'Tactical' knife.
  • All have a single blade.
  • Most are black with some sand colored or camo. Bright colors need not apply.
  • A black blade is better.
  • Most have an exotic blade steel. 1095 carbon or 440 stainless need not apply.
  • Handle material? Please, no bone, Delrin®, Kirinite, Celluloid, Acrylic, Wood or Corian®. Exotic sounding handle materials only (Micarta, G-10, Linen Laminate, Canvas Laminate, etc, etc.)
  • Most are of simple construction and can be disassembled, then assembled by any 12 year old with the appropriate screwdrivers (seldom more than two)
  • Almost all have a blade locking mechanism of some sort, whether it be back lock, liner lock, frame lock, axis lock, etc, etc, etc.
  • Almost all are easily opened one handed. Some require a bit more dexterity than others (most thumb studs for me). Many are very simple (Kershaw Speed Safe ::tu:: ).
  • It helps a lot if they 'look' dangerous. (compare this to the "assault rifle")
  • Most all have a clip affixed to facilitate quick draw pocket carry.
  • The more expensive for so few parts and simple assembly, the better.
  • A bad-ass name is a real plus but actually what more than 'Tactical' (Tac-Ti-Cool) do you need?
There is no offense intended to the OP or anyone who has posted their knives here. My intent is only to have some fun with the "Tactical" label. Period.

Jerry it seems to me you have done an excellent job enumerating characteristics common to "tactical" knives. A definition I use relates to the blade's purpose i.e. a knife specifically designed for use in personal defense.

Granted virtually any knife, or any thing, can be used combatively.

Excellent research Jerry, maybe you have written the book on defining tactical folders? ::shrug:: Or maybe there is a need for someone in the knife book publishing arena to do so?

John, when I put that list together, my tongue was firmly implanted in my cheek. BUT, it does speak to the issue.
