Germany - Garantie Stahl Knives.

Post by New_Windsor_NY »

This pocket knife arrived recently and was in a very large group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. I did NOT purchase the group or lot to obtain this particular pocket knife. But, it did turn out to be a keeper. It is a GARANTIE STAHL, one blade, one tool (a corkscrew), one tang stamp, 4" closed, 7" open, "bartender" pattern or style of pocket knife. The main blade front tang stamp is the curved or arched style and says "GARANTIE (over) STAHL" It is in VERY GOOD condition. The blade has a good half stop with good opening and closing snap. I wiped it off, took some pictures and here it is.

J.O'., I am not 100% sure, but I think it does
have tortoise shell handles or scales. ::shrug::

Skip" Just an aside here on tortoise. I buy old tortoise items like dresser sets, combs, boxes, etc. and re-purpose the material into guitar picks. Nothing man-made compares to the sound and feel of a tortoise pick. I certainly don't condone killing tortoises for trinkets, but the antique stuff is there and might as well be making some good music. Here are a couple of my picks. Again I would never deal in any shell from today, but, like old ivory, the antique material has good uses. J.O'.

Hey there J.O. First off, those are great lookin picks! I agree with you on repurposing the old stuff into useable items.
I have a question about tortoise shell. I have a j.a. Henckel knife that I suspect has ts on it but I don’t really know if it’s real or imitation. How can I confirm either way?

The best test is distasteful to some. Heat a very thin needle and barely touch it to the handle in an inconspicuous place like an edge or a damaged or cracked area. If the puff of smoke smells like burnt hair, it's tortoise. If it has an acrid, camphor smell it's celluloid. I wouldn't recommend this on a knife in A-1 condition but an old knife usually has some little ding or scratch where the tiny needle point stick won't show. Your call.
Good luck, let us know. Like to see the knife. J.O'.
