Looks like I got some catchin' up to do around here since I have been away.
I have been walking through the East Tennessee hills huntin' for the elusive SandBar Stag and did find a fossil. Did not need no machine on that mission.
I hunted high and low. All it took was a little common sense and lots of luck. I knew SandBar's hung with Unicorns back in the day, so I tracked a herd.
Here is an oddball folder maybe someone can help me ID or confirm where it is from. It is not from around here I can tell you that.
Clasp Chatellerault Spainish French Navaja Mexican....... do any of those shoes fit?
The blade face is stamped:
ALEA JJUB
BARABOZA
in large caps.
My language identifer tells me that is Lappish-sami. I seen/owned some Laplander knives before and never seen one this style.
The blade back is at least 1/4 inch or more and lines up nicely with the backspring. "Walks & Talks" like a guillotine. Horn scales with brass pins and accents. Levine 4 Rev. suggests it could be French or Spainish.
It is 9 inches closed and 16 1/2 inches open. You need a deep pocket to carry it.
It feels tight and well made, I could use it to fight off a wild SandBar. More on that later.
Have a Nice & Safe Memorial Day week-end.
Remember....... It is not all about Shoppin' and Road Trips.
Later,
9ball
BTW: I also spend a week at Breakers on Clinton Highway with stick in hand waitin' for yerout. He nevered showed.

where am I
Hey;
I think that nutter may be a French Chatellerault Clasp. just a W.A.G.Looks like a hybrid between the two examples im looking at pictures of. How deep into the volcanic ash did you have to go to reach that big fella. One in the Smithsonian was collected in North Carolina and thats next door to sandbar country. That big clip probably scared off all the specimens.

Here You Are
Hello Mossdancer,
I saw that also, but was not sure either. There is a "Spanish French Navaja" on eBay now only smaller and Seller is calling it Spanish French. I saw another one on eBay awhile back and the seller was calling it Spanish French also. I am not sure of the connection unless they were made in France and shipped and sold in Spain.
Appears they are a Fighting knife.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1
If that is the case; Maybe this needs to be moved to the Tactical or European Knife Forum.
Then another Seller calls it Spanish only
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1
*The fossil I found is what may be an early East Tennessee SandBar Stag. Was not under no ash, laying there in the sand on the beach. I need to try and verify it before posting images here. Taking it over to UT Vet School and see if I can get DNA checked or may contact local Tennessee Wildlife Office/TWRA. More on that later. Same site, different channel/forum

Hey;
Says made in Chatellerault, France for export to Spain. Latin America and the U.S. That seems to cover all bases. The three balls do lend credence to Levines nickname of "Rattler". Migrate them if you like, there may not be any sandbar believers anywhere else. Who knows maybe you can instill some humor.

Am I Here?
Thanks. I can go along with that, even if I cannot pronounce it. It does have that Rattler. I can display it now and I did by mistake put this in the wrong forum. I will have another for this forum, but this time I know what it is and when not sure, I will ask.
Believe me.......there is SandBar Stag. I have a pocket knife & box around here to prove it also. And I would guess and say they will be several in the area soon.
Plus I have this old fossil.......Still need to at least show to TWRA first.
If an old French Fighting knife and a guy like Sam Houston can end up in East Tennessee so could a SandBar Stag. Houston's football team moved back.

BTW: Does anybody know if Bum Phillips is still above ground?

Whos where
For your info.
Bum remains one of the most popular sports figures in Houston and Texas history. After leaving New Orleans, he worked as a football analyst on radio and television in the Houston area. Now in his 80’s, he lives with his wife on his ranch in South Texas not far from his hometown where they breed and raise championship cutting horses.
Known for his homespun quips, one of Bum’s more famous was his regard for NFL coaching legend Don Shula, "He can take his'n and beat your'n: then take your'n and beat his'n."
