Yes, the saw blade on SAK's cuts well without binding. It is a very useful blade.

Re: VICTORINOX knives 1884- present SWISS ARMY KNIVES
Although I don't normally collect Swiss Army Knives somehow they seem to fall into my hands occasionally. Here are two I recently acquired.
The miniature metal handled one has a logo that looks like a fist clenching a bar or something like that. Fifty cents at the local flea market.
The big is called a Ranger 06 Mountaineer and has never been carried.$12 at the same flea market.

Ray, your Ranger Mountaineer can sell on ebay for $30-$40. It is a real workhorse of the SAK's, a very good back country carry knife.

Roland:What I like about it is the size and lightness of it.A big knife that doesn't weigh a short ton. Still a bit too large to pocket carry though.kootenay joe wrote:Ray, your Ranger Mountaineer can sell on ebay for $30-$40. It is a real workhorse of the SAK's, a very good back country carry knife.

Re: VICTORINOX knives 1884- present SWISS ARMY KNIVES
I find a saw blade is often useful. With twigs/brush it can be easier to saw through than slice through and the saw blade on SAK's cuts well without binding. The only other makes i have found with a good saw blade is Eye Brand (Schlieper) and Schrade USA, the 97OT.

Re: VICTORINOX knives 1884- present SWISS ARMY KNIVES
The saw blades that cut the best are the ones that the blade thickness is less at the top than at the teeth.A lot of the early style saws had parallel sides(same thickness top and bottom) that cause the blade to bind.Although I find that saws that cut on the back stroke(pull) seem to work better for me the one on the Mountaineer is multi-directional.kootenay joe wrote:I find a saw blade is often useful. My first one in quite a while. It just grabbed me. A red one next month (I hope).

I like the alox ones that also have a saw blade (or, now scissors are an option); i.e. a 5 blade knife rather than the 4 blade shown above.

And here is a big SAK, 4 1/2" like the 2 shown above but this has a saw and big scissors as well as a locking master blade. Super good back country carry, in a belt sheath.

Here are 2 Wenger 'Gents' knives, 2 9/16" closed with brushed nickel-silver handles ?
The one in the metal box has nail clippers that work.
The other is a 6 blade with 3 narrow tools that i am not sure of their full range of functions.
Wenger made unique knives. ("unique", limited to themselves)

Found this Victorinox Mini Champ today. I'm liking this little one. Alot of tools for such a small package!
Re: VICTORINOX knives 1884- present SWISS ARMY KNIVES
And an early one too! Those lack the Phillips screwdriver/bottle opener. I have two newer ones; one needs some scales, or at least the secondhand scales I stuck on it to replace the pen scale I broke glued on.woodwalker wrote:Found this Victorinox Mini Champ today. Thank you Cody. Any idea how early? I googled it and it says it has a ballpoint pen. But this one does not.cody6268 wrote:And an early one too! Those lack the Phillips screwdriver/bottle opener. First of all, any numbers embossed into the bottom of the tray in the box? Quite often, they embossed the year on the bottom of that insert tray. The box itself seems like a 1990s box.woodwalker wrote:Thank you Cody. Any idea how early? I googled it and it says it has a ballpoint pen. But this one does not.cody6268 wrote:And an early one too! According to the SAK Wiki, the current model was introduced in 1994. Given when the pharmaceutical models some of its tools came from (cuticle pusher/pill counter blade, orange peeler/safety band cutter, and the Wharncliffe/tracheotomy blade) I'm guessing early-mid 1990s? The box seems to be of that vintage as well Oh, and early ones didn't have retractable pens, but the toothpick as most 58mms do.

Re: VICTORINOX knives 1884- present SWISS ARMY KNIVES
Thanks so much for the info Cody! The plastic insert does not have any numbers on the bottom. But on the sides it has some symbals. One side says XX-2V. And the other side has 17. On the side of the cardboard box it says Mini champ Pocket 53971. The actual warranty is in the inside of the box cover. Thank you for the link to the Mini Champ. I really like this little knife!! Still has oIL on the blades. I don't think this one was used at all. Some rub marks on the scale but blades and tools appear to have original oil on them.

Can you show me an example of the "tracheotomy blade" ? I am not sure which one it is.
