Shutting down ebay account...forced to

Post by TripleF »

As of October 22, 19 if I don't accept Managed Payments (all thru ebay interface) I'm not allowed to list anything....same for all ebay sellers.

If you see something on ebay I'm selling and think you might want it.....let's talk. I still take ANY AND ALL forms of payment of trade!
Checks too!!

Nope....they are forcing us to use payments thru THEM only, not Paypal. The processor is called Ayden. They will handle all payment for ebay.
Money will be deposited directly to my bank in 2 to 4 days......and I don't want that type of delay. I don't want ebay telling me when they're going to release my money.

Same for all of you other ebay sellers.....beware!!

What about the buyers? If I'm not mistaken, currently PayPal is the only way of paying on eBay. Am I wrong?

Currently Paypal is the main option.
From what I get it will be credit card ONLY after 10/22. You won't be able to pay with your Paypal balance as I usually do. I've actually purchased
a couple times from people who've converted to Managed Payments and I cancelled the order because I woulda been forced to pay with my credit
card and I wanted to use the funds in my Paypal account.

Gonna be downright hairy 10/22.....mark my words.

Thanks for the heads up Scott, I've noticed a couple of purchases lately were through the ebay payment system but thought that was the sellers choice did not know it was going to be mandatory.

Thanks for the input Scott. I suspected that was what they were working towards. I have received several emails urging me to sign up. I think that when my currently listed knives run off, I'll sign off also. I guess I'll start listing everything in my AAPK store.

This from ebay moments ago:

Today we inadvertently sent you an incorrect message in My eBay. The subject line read, “Count on BIG sales with these items.” The message was related to a different topic. Please disregard the message.

I urge you both not to do that. Just walk through the link they have provided and set up the bank account that you want this money to go into. eBay is going to be taking payments FOR you From other sources than PayPal. It’s going to cause your fee to PayPal to drop to,2.7 instead of 3%, which saves, you money. And people, who don’t use PayPal can now pay you with a credit card, debit card Square and any other payment systems out there that you aren’t set up to take and YES you will still be taking PayPal as well.
If the issue is keeping monies separate, just move the funds from the bank account over to PayPal. Nothing says you can’t still use PayPal. Just an extra step to get it there. It’s really a nice change that will expand they different payments that you can accept. While EBay is doing all the work and lowering fees.

I'm also hoping this isn't as bad as it seems. I'm also tempted to drop out but may wait a bit. I consider my pp account a bank account. I like having money in it for on line purchases. I can't think of a single reason why my ebay sales can't be directly deposited into my pp account. We know the hard work has been done and the system works. I could care less what method buyers use to pay me or what the fees are so long as they pay. I only take money out of my pp account once a year so the timing is irrelevant as well. So when we buy something from Jantz or even pay our AAPK store fees in the near future we will no longer be able to pay from our pp balance, but instead will have to have a pp credit card? I guess Scott said after a certain date you will no longer be able to pay for your ebay purchases from your pp account balance but will instead be made to use a pp credit card? This all seems way silly to me. If it ain't broke why fix it?

I do not understand the changes being made. I am an ebay buyer, not seller and i pay with funds in my PP account.
Mark says it will be a good system and that PP can still be used to pay the seller, and this is reassurance enough for me.
Mark has a financial background and he understands these systems, so Scott i urge you to hang in there and see how it unfolds. A year from now you might like the 'new' system.

A while back ebay announced they were doing away with Turbo Lister and the Ebay Seller's Hub was the new listing tool. I balked at the idea because Turbo Lister was all I had ever used. I thought it was idiot proof and worked great - why change it? I hate to say this but after having used the Seller's Hub for a full year it is better and 10 times easier to use. I agree with the others about giving up your banking information but you can set up a separate account and link it to the Internet. The only things there are issues like minimum balance and maybe too frequent transactions? I'm going to think things over before I decide what to do for sure. I enjoy reading the input of others. Chime in with your thoughts.

I'll give it a chance and then if I don't like it I won't sell on Ebay anymore. That's easier for me to say because I only sell on Ebay maybe 10 times a year, if that.

Scott, PayPal is not going away. In fact EBay still owns a big part of PayPal. If this were going to diminish PayPal the stock would have tanked, but it hasn’t. I bought stock in PayPal many years ago when eBay first spun off PayPal and it’s been one of my best performing investments. Trust me I would know if this meant the demise of PayPal. Both companies are trying to broaden their reach and appeal. For many years PayPal was dependent on eBay but after they became a stand alone company they had to be less dependent on one customer and the same is true for EBay. Each one held the others fate in their hands, not a good place to be.
I understand the resistance to setting up separate accounts and not putting your banking information online. But I do think this will help you the seller to reach more potential buyers since you will be able to accept more than one form of payment. I have customers that contact me about alternatives to PayPal all the time since they don’t have a PayPal account. So I think this will actually be a benefit. Plus if eBay is taking care of the transaction, then I will be getting one tax form from them and not a separate form from each payment vendor. So there are a lot of benefits to doing this. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

I'm also concerned about the upcoming ebay changes and have seen conflicting communications in the past few months about what exactly is going to change and how. I agree with the sentiments expressed above by Just Bob. I was really not at all enthusiastic about the new ebay seller's hub at first and didn't want to mess with it, but now I think its the best thing since sliced bread. So, I'm going to wait and see how it all plays out before I make any drastic decisions. For me, paypal works great for paying and receiving payments and I just hope they don't screw it up. Mark why do you suppose Ebay will no longer allow you to direct deposit your ebay sales into your pp account? Instead you must stipulate a bank account. This seems illogical to me. What is the difference between a pp account and a bank account, especially an on line bank account like Ally? In time they are also going to phase out using your pp account balance to make ebay purchases and instead you'll have to use a card. I consider pp handier than a door knob and use it quite often. The money I generate from my ebay sales goes directly into my pp account and from there I send $ to my kids or buy things. Way better than buying a MO every time. I don't understand the logic in the changes. There must be greed or more fees involved somewhere in these changes or else why wouldn't you just leave it alone?

Mark,
Also, you mentioned an eBay tax form. Will a person who sells just a few items on eBay be receiving a 1099?

I think it's 200 items or $20,000 in sales

As a buyer and not a seller I have never maintained money in my PP account. When I make a payment PP charges a particular credit card I have listed with them. I may be missing some of the implications of ebay's changes, but as of now it appears there will be no effect on buyers. Hope that is correct.
