Another option might be to make a guard for it. If you are going to rehandled it anyway, remove the pommel and guard, lay that guard out on a new piece of brass and draw out the shape you want, then cut it out with a Dremel.cody6268 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 25, 2022 10:31 pm My grandmother cleaned out her closet, and handed me a WWII era USN MKII that I had found in a garden shed as a kid. I honestly thought it had gotten thrown away at some point.
I did dumb, and apparently whatever I used to try to remove the rust probably also removed the tang stamps. I was 13 and dumb... I think it was a Pal? but I'm not sure anymore due to my own preteen stupidity. I later discovered super-fine steel wool and WD-40 works wonders.

It doesn't seem as bad as I remembered, other than the screwups related to using a Dremel for rust removal. Can it be salvaged? Or should I leave it as-is for posterity?
If I do decide to take the pommel off, I am looking three options for the broken guard. First of all, I am just going to use it, and then flip it around so that the part that isn't broke shields my finger from the blade. The second is to use the one that comes in Kabar's kit if it fits a non-Kabar MKII (I understand that WWII examples are MUCH different from the 1970s and later civilian models) so that it will snap in to the polymer sheath I use for my other Kabar variants (one Camillus, one Ontario). Third is to find a correct guard.
If you want to keep it more original, then I would flip the guard around like you said.
I think that either of those are good ideas.

Here is a TOPS Tactical Steak Knife I have had for about 5 or so years. Silly name, but a strong, stout knife that I have used with reckless abandon for everything from gutting a deer, prying up nails, splitting kindling, slicing cheese, cutting rope, digging up tent stakes, etc. It keeps an edge, doesn't chip, and resharpens easily. I treat this knife as a tool, kinda like my KaBar, and it hasn't let me down.

Some beauties in that group Koldgold, great group.
Mike that's a heck of a sales pitch after all that has been through and whipped it all. That should be on an advertisement for Tops. Can't get a much better real world endorsement than that. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. Almost makes me want to go get a Tops but my Beckers might not agree with that.

I’m glad you said slicing the cheese because cutting it could melt even the best knives.313 Mike wrote: ↑Mon Oct 17, 2022 12:16 am Here is a TOPS Tactical Steak Knife I have had for about 5 or so years. That's a great looking knife Dan. I like hunting knives with orange handles, and that one is classic looking without being too neon bright...

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
The 9 is bigger than the 16?
The larger of the 2 looks like a heck of a chopper!

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Much bigger. The BK-9 has a 9 inch blade. That was back when the # meant inches:BK-7 was 7 inch. As you can see by the time he designed the BK-16 it no longer meant inches. BK-16 has a 4 1/2 blade. You're so right, the BK-9 is a heck of a chopper, it has replaced my camp hatchet because it digs in much deeper and the longer blade with a baton can split up to 7 inch stuff easily. It's a great knife, so handy and well balanced, you don't feel like you're wielding a 9 inch blade. Makes quick work of hot dog roasting sticks, tent pegs, fire sticks, etc. And can be used as a spear or pry bar in a pinch too. Cannot say enough good about the BK-9. Probably the best eighty bucks I ever spent on a knife.

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Thanks a bunch my friend, appreciate the compliment. I try to improve their looks when I get them and I see you have too. I like the cord wrapped handle you have there and looks like another BK-16, although I don't know, but good looking knife period. Thanks again.
