Show off your fixed blades!

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
big bore, Very nice stag handled knife! The copper is a nice twist too. The natural color stag is something you don't see everyday. If you don't mind telling, who is the maker, is he from Germany? Thanks, Terry fellow knife maker.

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
I had that exact same blue Mora which I just gave to a friend about a week ago. I still have another, larger, Mora. Great knives.

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Just finishing this one up just incase someone wants to get in a fight on a sandbar? Forged blade out of 3/8" piece of 1080. the handle is my own making, a horn core out of a Sable antelope , dyed, stabilized, and waxed. It is 14 inches long with a 9 inch blade about 1/4" thick , hand made sheath. Thanks for looking. Terry

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Wow, Terry, makes me want to go to some sandbar and pick a fight. I usually prefer fixed blades on a smaller scale but that stirs visions of Jim Bowie in my Texas heart. Excellent work. You guys kill me with such craftsmanship.terryl308 wrote:Just finishing this one up just incase someone wants to get in a fight on a sandbar? Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Beautiful work Terry. Wonderful handle. Unusual and interesting grind lines creating what I'll call a half ricasso. Don't know how to describe it.
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Thanks dog and qs, I usually don't make many huge knives, but thought I would try my hand at a Bowie type. A lot of the old 1830-40's bowies had a false edge similar to this. It's kind of a bitch to grind because I do all my grinding freehand. I too like smaller knives, in the 4 inch blade length range. I doubt anyone will use this thing although it does take a wicked edge. Cuts paper like crazy. Thanks for the comments! Terry

Terry, great looking Bowie! 3/8' stock, man, that is a beast. And the sheath is nice too!

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Steve, I meant to say I started with a piece of 3/8" bar stock and forged it down and drew it out and ended up with 1/4" thick. BTW , it's a hard way to make a knife!, lot easier to start with 1/4" and just use stock removal method. But I have a forge and an old little giant trip hammer (50lb.) so why not use it once in a while. Terry

Forging that much was a lot of work. Great that you have a power hammer.
Keep up the good work.
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
I would imagine it is Terry. I've seen forging in industrial valve shops and can appreciate the task. Its a lot of grinding no matter how you slice it.terryl308 wrote:Steve, I meant to say I started with a piece of 3/8" bar stock and forged it down and drew it out and ended up with 1/4" thick. Is your hammer driven by a motor?

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Steve, Yes I put a 3 hp elec. on it with two v belts to drive it, it was in an old blacksmith shop here in Lodgepole driven by a flat belt, so I had to revamp it. It was made in the 20's but still going strong! It weighs in at about 1600 pounds. If I can find a photo I'll put one on here. This pic was taken before I moved it into my shop.(no elec. motor yet) Terry

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
This is a late '50's, early '60's Wilkinson Sword Royal Air Force survival knife. It was in dire need of a light restoration and the scabbard had suffered some what. The later versions of this knife are even more heavy duty. Although no longer issued, they are being reproduced (in varying quality)
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Unclebob you certainly cleaned it up. Looks like a bush crafter.
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Unclebob, I have never seen one of those, thanks for showing. Looks like a good example and a excellent maker. Terry
