Marco, usually discontinued products result from inadequate sales and therefore inadequate profits. A rumor is that Camillus used considerable SK5 and when that brand departed so too did sufficient demand.

Marco, I got to wondering how good was the info I was passing on to you. It was years old and mostly scuttlebutt. So I spent time with Google and low and behold SK5 is still around. Even Cold Steel has it in one or another of their knives. As a Japanese carbon steel it might also be commonly used outside the U.S. Anyway, properly heat treated, this carbon steel seems very practical for many knives and swords.

Thanks for that additional info Garry. It's nice knowing that they found something extremely useful, and instead of tossing it by the wayside they continue using it. Now THAT makes sense to me!
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
A rare Boker Leo-Damast V, the 600 layer damascus was forged by Markus Balbach of Germany, and German custom knife maker, Patrick Teyke assembled them for Boker. Markus used 4 different steels in this damascus and was forged thick for this integral. It has Desert Ironwood burl handles. The steel takes a nice edge and holds it very well.
Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Just got home and I had stopped in a pawn shop on my way.
I picked up this 6 1/4" MOORE MAKER INC. Damascus Fixed Blade.
I'm going to need to contact them to find out when it was made.

Cool old Cases Gary. Isn't the top knife an unknown pattern according to Sargent's?

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
I have posted this other places, but it belongs here too. Shoshui Takeda forged san mai, Aogami Super Blue core, micarta and mammoth ivory. I am really pleased with this knife. I will post pics in the sheath, as it is well made and locks the knife in place with wood inserts, reminds me of a traditional puukko sheath.
About Shoshui:
The third-generation master blacksmith Shosui Takeda was born and raised in Niimi, Okayama in Japan. After graduating from a university and working in Tokyo, he returned to his hometown to succeed his father as a blacksmith. Since 1985 he has strived and studied to produce the very best hand-forged blades and tools. His knives are forged by hand with his small staff of master smiths.

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Just arrived is a Condor Moonshiner, which is a pretty big knife with a nine-inch blade. I bought this to serve as a bolo-type knife when working in the woods. To quote the 1909 Abercrombie and Fitch catalog when referring to the Collins "Brush Knife" (often incorrectly called a Bowie); "An excellent camp implement. Used in same manner as a small hatchet, for clearing out trails, traveling through swamps, canebrakes,
etc." That was my basic idea, mostly for clearing fence lines and to accompany my chainsaw; or a smaller axe like the Estwing I keep in the bag with my saw chaps, safety glasses, and gloves.
It was on sale for $40 from $80, and uh, I couldn't refuse.
Check out the tang thickness!

Cody that looks like it ought to do the job for sure.

That is a very practical looking knife. Should serve your purpose, looking good doing it. And great price.

Re: Show off your fixed blades!
Posted these on the Gerber forum but thought I would put them here as well. My latest acquisitions at one of the local antique stores.Guy got a box of knives in and these were my picks that fell (almost)within my "knife budget". Wife hasn't eviscerated me with one yet so I think I'm home free.
The three Gerbers I got a fantastic deal on;I knew they were kind of pricey but I didn't think they were THAT pricey! The other one is on reflection probably Indian or Pakistani but still a nice knife and I like it.
