GOT SHIELDS?
Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Cool shields all .. In particular that 6 shield knife posted above is very cool Another Knife Collector ...
Here's something different - a "waterfall" celluloid shield made by Thomaston Knife Co on a sleeveboard pen... This was a patent by Charles Platts (one of the 5 sons of the father Charles) in 1922 when Platts was the manager of Thomaston from 1916 until the company ended in 1930... The patent for the celluloid shield claimed it was more durable than nickel silver as it didn't tarnish and was easier to engrave with initials ... Note the pile side stamp is "pat applied for"... if Charles only knew the issues with celluloid ...

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
That's awsome Lee. Celluloid looks pretty stable to me.
Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Thanks Keith ... The celluloid definitely looks stable in the shield (for now )... hope it stays that way. The handle may also be dark celluloid (dark is supposedly is more stable because more binders were added in the production) though it really has the appearance of bakelite to me so not sure of handle itself...

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
That knife reminds me of Schatt and Morgan's dollar knives. That's a cool knife buddy, although celluloid gives me the heebie jeebies. They are a dangerous seductress.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Thanks Lyle - and yes celluloid is by far not my favorite handle material and I always pass on it except for the 5 celluloid knives I have which were specially priced and unique knives - in this case the knife made me buy it ... One thing I try and do is photograph the few celluloid knives so if they "explode" I will still have some memories ... I set myself a low price as a maximal value for celluloid purchasing but overall as much as I like some looks of celluloid I stay far away...

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Thanks Dimitri, I posted it on another thread and Phil suggested I post it here because of the shield, he had never seen one.

Here is one I had never seen before. It is an eight bladed Japanese made camper style knife tang stamped "Ekikanetsugu stainless steel Japan". It has a neat cross shaped shield. I picked it up at our first local flea market of the season yesterday.

Jim, the cross on that Japanese knife is pretty neat.
Here's one from Rough Rider I had never seen before.

I like that Texas Longhorn shield, Greg...simple yet elegant and evocative. Normally, I tend to prefer simple, minimalist shields like that, but recently these two colorful ones caught my eye and tickled my fancy.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Here's a couple of cool shields on a pair of Smooth Oatmeal Bone Case Russlocks that I sold a few years ago (but now I really wish I hadn't).
The blade etch on the Russlock with the Stetson shield is also the coolest blade etch I have ever seen. Man, how I regret ever selling this one!

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
This one is on the Case 07W I bought for my grandson's H.S. graduation / enlisting gift.
That horseshoe shield is way cool. I think I've even seen it on a Rough Rider. I tend to forget this thread is here until someone refreshes it. Acquired a Case 07 with a John Deere shield since the last time my brain was engaged.

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
Beautiful handle on that knife Dimitri ... I see the appeal for sure ... Kinda reminds me in a way of old San Franscisco knife maker style with abalone adornment in shield and fancy handle pin design (actually I’ve seen many bowies in photos from SF but not sure how many pocket knives I’ve ever seen from those makers - I know Will & Finck made all kinds of things such as corkscrews, lime squeezers etc) but I’m also guessing maybe Sheffield? - Was abalone used very much in Sheffield work??

Re: GOT SHIELDS?
These thick solid ebony handle slabs sold on Ebay last week for under twenty dollars.
They are not pocketknife handles, as they are drilled from the lower end to accept the round tang of a straight knife, most likely dinner knives.
I suspect a good knife maker or mechanic could saw these down to adapt to a folder, though.
Seller suggested they were from Herder.
I saved the pics for the shields.
