Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Little Valley N.Y. 1886-1963

The Cattaraugus Cutlery Company was started by John Champlin and his son Tint in 1882. It was first incorporated under the name J.B.F. Champlin and Son as a wholesale distribution company based in Little Valley, New York. The business proved to be a successful endeavor, and it soon branched into a knife production company named Cattaraugus.

A Cattaraugus scout knife with pearl handles .
First 4 blade I’ve seen with genuine pearl , most likely a special order or presentation piece .

Thanks for looking .

Mike, Roger, great knives!

I picked a Catt up this week that I have not seen before, it's a very small single blade jack, 2 5/8", no pattern number. Pictures show it next to an old KK Barlow for size comparison.

Some really nice Catts posted lately. ::tu::

Mike, that’s the first pearl Cattaraugus scout knife I’ve seen. Great find, sorry I missed seeing it earlier.

I’m happy to see the addition of a Winchester forum here. Now where’s our Cattaraugus forum????? ::shrug::

Great knives Mike, those pearl scouts are fantastic!!

Here is my latest Catt that's coming in the mail. I've known about it for a very long time and have tried many times to buy it through the years. It was found in the old Champlin Opera House after a fire destroyed the building. I can't remember the exact size of the knife but the hammer in the picture is a full sized hammer.

Can't wait to get it in my hands!!

Wow Mike ::tu:: ::tu:: ... a very cool and unique knife at that size 8) ... Found in the opera house is interesting - was it a theater knife though it doesn’t appear to be just for theatrics ::hmm:: ...

The Opera House was the main office in the very beginning of JBF's knife venture. It was also the shipping room in the early days. The man I am getting it from worked for the town and found it. He told me that there was another one in better condition somewhere in LV but that he never saw it.

There is a big dagger in the American Cutlery Museum in Cattaraugus that was in the Pan Am expo, I believe this knife was made around the same time.

I have attached a picture of the Pan Am knife with the curator of the museum, Pat Cullen.
