Old Official & Non-Official Folding Military Pocket Knives

Post by Miller Bro's »

Yeah I know, we have a military knives forum. But the same 5 people visit it on this web site

I wanted to start a thread here in Knife Lore showing all the various official and non-official military type folding pocket knives that were made over the years by many makers, in the early years they were mostly supplied from makers in England. During WWI & WWII the American knife companies mobilized to make millions of knives for the U.S. Government war effort. A little know fact is that women assembled many of these pocket knives during this time.

Many of these knives have beautiful jigged bone handles and stag handles, among many other types. There are some books out now on just military folding knives and they are starting to get popular. They were made for all branches of the military, some very specialized.

Here are a few to start off, I will post more later. I would like to see any you may have, they can be from any country in the world, as long as they are old ::tu::

Very Nice Charlie!

I would say Robeson had the very best fit and finish as well as jigged bone handles with all their knives produced during WWII ::nod:: ::tu:: ::drool::

Here is a 1944 USCG approved rope knife.
I believe these were part of the survival gear in the life rafts.

I know this is a long shot, kinda like the "hey u know that one movie with that guy from the action movie from the 80s?". but here goes.

Used to have a very large, black military knife made in Michigan with 2 blades. A regular master blade and a wicked looking saw blade. I believe the town in Michigan started with a G, if i recall correctly (no, not Gladstone). Do not remember the maker, but sold it for 100. Wondered if you guys had any suggestions of insight into this?

Yes,

That would be the the knife that was in aircraft survival kits.

They were made by 1.Colonial, Providence R.I., 2.The United Machine Tool Co. , Grand Rapids, Mich. 3. one version was completely unmarked.

The one you are asking about is the second one I listed, They are stamped United G.R. Mich.

I have a Needham, same checkered black plastic handles.

I also have these three all the same maker, ABL.

These were a dime a dozen a few years ago, I regularly passed up buying them they were so plentiful and cheap ::shrug:: I don`t see them around as much now :(

Those ABL knives are post WWII manufacture and were not made in the UK. They are still floating around over here and are still cheap. They were made in Belgium for their army.

MB, that is a beautiful knife.

Those type Ulster knives really ring my bell.

During WWII, they were issued to the 10th Mountain Division and to the First Special Service Force, a combined U.S. and Canadian commando unit known as The Devil's Brigade and the forerunner of today's United States Army Special Forces, a unit near and dear to my heart.

As an aside, despite who you might hear state otherwise, The United States only has ONE Special Forces and that is The United States Army Special Forces. There are NO Marine "special forces", no Air Force "special forces" and no Navy "special forces".

The Marines have Force Recon, the Air Force has Air Commandos and the Navy has Seals.

All those units, including the Army Special Forces and others fall under the Special Operations Command (SOCOM) umbrella.

End of rant. Don't know what set it off. ::woot::

Nice knife!!!
