My latest.I was told this may be pre WWI,any experts??

If you look closely you can see that the rat tails are done by hand,as maybe a lot of the other parts.

My Christmas present to myself from a fine gentleman that raises cattle and builds barns.

The IXL does not have the star between the I and X.I know some of the very old knives had this stamp,But I don't think this knife is that old.I can't tell the Wostenholm dating, but this is a very nice knife.

It looks as if the whole knife was hand made, blades also, but I really don't know.It would be mint except for a few fly specs here and there. The bone jigging still has a bite when you run your finger over it.

Thank you MB. I like nice ones(like the IXL) ,but as you see, I am not afraid of a NKIFE with a little "character" :D

Cool collection of farmer jacks, Lyle. ::tu:: ::drool::

I just learned that they are called "rooster comb" knives too.

Lyle, that looks like one beefy knife.

As nice a farmer's jack as I think I've ever seen.

Very Nice IXL lyle. Congrats.
A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).

Thanks,Charlie and Roger. It is one of my favorites.I still love the old Schrades and Bokers too.

I think that is a fairly old stamp also.

By the way Dimitri,LT said Ulster did make a big bladed farmer jack,I asked. Whatever it is,it has more character than any I have.

Lyle, beautiful knives! That Ulster's the 4303, I don't think they made one bigger than that unless they had it in the early Divine days. The next size up would be the single blade hawkbill.

Hi Lyle. Your Wostenholm stamps are similar to those in this 1930s brochure. That time frame is also consistent with your black composite knife. The 'oil the joints' stamp on the reverse of the tang dates circa 1930s to early 1970s. The same pattern appears in a 1960s catalog (scan2) I hope this helps.

Does anybody know if someone made a shell knife in this pattern? I am thinking colonial or Imperial. Seems likely. I sure would like one for every day carry. I have never seen one of any kind when I am out looking. You guys sure have made me want one. I will be looking.

I have not seen a shell handle. Nice nkife :) cato, only thing wrong with it is it's not in my collection. Congratulations.

Speaking of collections. Here's the collection so far,not great photography.I'll try to get better,it's harder for me to capture larger groups. My best pictures seem to come from subdued sunlight ,using the super macro feature on my camera.

These were hastily taken at night with ordinary household lighting laid out on a sheet.

Beautiful knife Mike.  Your secondary blade has what Schrade called a "bark loosener" on it.

About the flat-sided blades. From Schrade catalog E 1932 Supplementary pgs. From page 86- Quote:
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"They possess a remarkably keen cutting edge and the flat side is exactly in line with the direction one takes when cutting and the result is a beautifully flat and undamaged surface to every cut. With these new flat-sided blades you can bud or graft more successfully and obtain more "takes"due to the perfect joint between scion and stock."

These flat-sided blades in this pattern were also evidenced in several prominent knife makers at this same time period. It's "funny" has everybody gets the same ideas at the same time. :)
