Re: Farmer's Jacks
Got a very rare knife. It is the only " farmers whittler" or nursery whittler as Holley calls this pattern that I collect. I have 3 other English farmers whittlers and I know Sheffield maker Thomas Turner made one too, maybe more Sheffield made.
This Holley is the only American version I've heard of.Holleys are rare, farmers jacks are rare, and whittlers ( split spring) with pruning masters are rarer. Thanks JohnR for alerting me and not making me bid higher.
The frame on the whittler is 18.2mm and the frame on the FJ is 17.5mm at their tallest heights. ?? I imagine the difference is one is the standard frame for the nurseryman and the whittler uses Holley's big wharncliffe frame.??

Thanks Keith and John. I love that old knife about as much as any I have. At least in this moment.
John, I’ve had the regular FJ for a while. Mike Locsico let me have it.

Beautiful knives, Lyle.
Congratulations on the whittler. It is in a very good home.
I have a large Holley Wharncliffe but it is only 11/16" at it's widest part of the frame. That translates to 17.4625 mm.
No number stamped on mine, of course. A 316 would be special to have.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Congrats. on the rare rooster whittler Lyle!
A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).
Re: Farmer's Jacks
Congrats Lyle, glad you got it, that's one of those I doubt we will ever see another of.
Re: Farmer's Jacks
Absolutely awesome knife Lyle. Glad it's yours. That had to be a joy to get!!!
Re: Farmer's Jacks
A catalog cut of Thomas Turners version. I would think there are others. A Clements , which I suspect has DNA from Turners ,whether factory or one of the Mills trained from Turner. The better stag one has two pen blades ,the other two have a budding and pen secondaries. They are also very early stainless.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Thanks Lee and John, I’ve been blessed. The two stag Clements were given me.
John Lloyd gave me the unused one, which is etched stainless throughout. I suppose the other stag was etched at one time, it’s stainless too, and was the first I’d seen. It was given to me by Mike Losicco. Within a few months I had two more, go figure.
I’ll post a picture of the etched blade on the other one when I get back to the computer. You can see it here:
