Re: Old Cattle Knives
Schrade definitely got something from the Ulster jigging Ken. I say Ulster laid the egg that hatched into peach seed.
Beautiful pickbones on those Empires Barry and Greg.
Nice knife rygmar, although it is perplexing.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
That's a nice one KAW. I would recommend that you pocket that one and try it out a little. There is no knife that is as small and handy that can do it all and look so good quite like an old and slim 3 3/8" jr cattle.
It's my suspicion that the ulster 3 3/8" cattles like yours were made by schrade during the cut or early walden era. I have the same ulster and comparing it to my early sw 856's they are the same in blade dimensions, grinds and swedges. All other dimensions are the same as well; I think the peachseed just confirms it.

Thanks Joe, Lyle & Paul...
I was under the impression that this tang stamp is pre-Baer era when the two entities were still separate companies with no connection to each other yet... that being Schrade Cutlery Co, and Ulster Knife Co.?KnifeSlinger#81 wrote:It's my suspicion that the ulster 3 3/8" cattles like yours were made by schrade during the cut or early walden era. KAW that is correct, but it's possible ulster contracted the knives to schrade. However it could have happened I don't know, but I strongly think they are schrades. The tang stamp does not say so, but everything else about the knife does, if that makes sense.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
Isn't peachseed bone a Schrade innovation? I remember reading that only Schrade had the machining necessary for that jigging effect. If the Ulster is pre-Baer then I do think that knife is a Schrade build, and I know Paul likely has enough old Schrades on hand to prove it.KnifeSlinger#81 wrote:KAW that is correct, but it's possible ulster contracted the knives to schrade. Re: Old Cattle Knives
I think peachseed was invented by schrade and they were the only ones that did it. Now Herman Williams is the only one who does it like old schrade.
There are ulsters that have peachseed delrin but those are from when schrade and ulster were both in ellenville.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
Nice knives Lyle. They look like schrade based on the bone, but old schrades also have distinctive blades and swedging. Those features are just as important in determining if it's schrade as the peachseed is especially in the cases of schrades that used handles other than peachseed.
There's also the overall "look" of the way it's built that has the schrade touch. This is hard to see on internet photos but in person it's easier to tell.

I'll play along at home. Going left to right, my guesses are Yes, No, No.wlf wrote:Are these Schrades?
Re: Old Cattle Knives
Correct Jerry. I had a Holley with rudimentary jigging like this too.
Schrade came later in Manufacturing, I know they borrowed or hired Empire’s design or engineering on their farmers jacks.
Left to right, I’ve confirmed the one on the left is a Schrade, the next is Ulster then Southington.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
Jerry... you did better at this game than I did...
Many employees "played musical chairs" between the different companies and been commonly shifting between Conn. and N.Y. factories since the 1850's through the 1920's. Back then a big part of your value was your knowledge and experience. If you knew how to make a certain pattern a company may few or no one else can make, they were more apt to hire you and perhaps at a higher rate of pay. Not like today where you are required to sign all kinds of legal papers saying that any knowledge you gain from a company is theirs and therefore you can't use it if you work for the competition.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
I took a photo of my best cattle knives the other day for the schrade section. Three early schrade walden 856's, an ulster jr that is practically identical to the 856's so I consider it schrade made, a schrade cut 8566 in pearl and a schrade cut 8173 "full size" 3 5/8".

Seein' some real beauties, fellers!
I will say I prefer having the extra blade instead of a punch, but that's me.
Someday I'll own one.
Some....day.... *sigh*

A pair of imperials from 1936-52, almost twins. The long pull main seems to be more common on these than the nail nick.

Two equal end junior cattle knives. Shapleigh HDW DE 3 & 1/4 inches closed and a Keen Kutter 3 & 3/8 inches closed.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
Two stunners Lloyd ... You think the Shapleigh was made by Empire? It sort of has that look of Empire quality ... and the Keen Kutter is awesome - looks about minty to me with lovely bone!!

Here's one you don't see every day. A pearl Atkinson with nice thick scales, fairly well used and no cracks. I just might carry this one for a while. ____Dave
