Re: Hardware Store and Distributor Knives
I did some research a while back on an Oregon hardware store to solve a Cattaraugus pocket knife etch mystery-

Posted some links to Oakland, OR history too. I just might have to visit and take that knife with me some day.

A John Primble India Steel Works, most likely made around WW1, looks like Schrade Cut Co made to me.

Jack Knife Ben sold a lot of Schrade knives when he had a shop in Union Stock Yards, Chicago.

While not exactly a "pocket knife" it is a hardware store knife. Marshall Wells co. fixed blade. They were a Duluth MN based hardware store and this is the only fixed blade I've seen of theirs. It's also marked as having German makings which is new to me as well.
Re: Hardware Store and Distributor Knives
From our "local" hardware store, three Marshall Wells knives.____Dave

Re: Hardware Store and Distributor Knives
My “local“ hardware store Home Depot doesn’t have any knives like those
Dave, those are three outstanding Marshall Wells Jacks !!
Three distinct jigging patterns, three different primary blades and three different shields are all very intriguing and nice

Re: Hardware Store and Distributor Knives
Marshall Wells was quite a business. It had a railroad track that ran right into the building. It had a workout room and daycare for the employees in the upper floors and had regular dealer meetings where outlets around the area could send their employees for training and to see what the company offered. the building is still standing but is now several restaurants and other businesses. It still is an impressive big building down on the waterfront in Duluth. One of my son's was working on the sprinkler systems in the building and the current manager of that particular business gave my son a couple copies of old Marshall Wells common stock papers that were still somewhere in the building from the 1940's or 50's. I have one framed in my office.____Dave

Re: Hardware Store and Distributor Knives
Really cool, Ike, like that Harrisburg connection.
I don't think I ever posted this BLISH MIZE & SILLIMAN HDWE CO. utility knife that I believe Utica made for Western. 4 3/4" 4 blade in what they may have called Gold Shell Pyralin (celluloid but seems to be pretty stable like old Case Goldstone). Goins says they came into existence in 1871 and may still be in operation. Case 6445R for size comparison.

Here is a 4" Miller Sloss & Scott (1891-1901)stockman with their stiletto trademark on the tang. They were absorbed into Pacific Hdwe & Steel in 1901, who continued to use the stiletto mark.
