It's very fragile, with a couple of cracks in the deeper carved grooves of the shell. Levine's book dates this 1829 - 1843. I'm wondering about the word Patent in the stamping?
Neal, I believe this knife pre-dates your Wilds knife by a couple of years?
Great old unique knife Barry ::tu:: ::tu:: ... Congreve was a really well known early Bowie Sheffield maker in the 1830s - indeed Congreve Bowies are quite collectable and were considered some of the first produced at that time. Anyway I also have an old quill marked GcrownR and "Patent" underneath (same time period 1820-1827 based on GcrownR) - If I understood correctly, as I asked the same question, the patent stamp means the cutlery was granted a patent by the king for the knife pattern. Thanks for sharing all those beauties in this thread Barry!

Fantastic Congreve model, Barry!!! Very interesting with the "Patent" stamp, and perhaps it was the first patented Wharncliffe model???
And yes, it probably predates my Wilds by possibly a decade.

An unusual whittler, kind of a Gun Stock Wharncliffe handle. A bit worn. Stamped Luke Firths Celebrated Cutlery on all 3 blades. Has Wharncliffe Knife stamped on the face of the master blade. Ivory handles 2 5/8" closed. Levine dates this stamp 1849 to 1870.

A true Wharncliffe. Waterville Cutlery Co. Conn. Engraved Aluminum 3" closed. Possibly from the time frame when aluminum was as valuable as gold?

Wow! That is different in a GOOD way. Excellent knife!! ::tu:: ::tu::

Nice knives Barry ::tu:: ... that gunstock Ivory wharncliffe is very cool 8) .. I posted the same Waterville on pg 17 of this thread - same stamp for Waterville but the aluminum handles are rounded whereas yours seems to be flat on each side - perhaps a variation of the handles made for these knives ::shrug:: ...

Gotta keep this thread alive even if all I have to offer is this recently released 2019 Case 6207W. But, it has a Wharncliffe blade; so, I believe it qualifies, even if it's on a Mini Trapper/Dogleg Jack frame.

Call it what you will, but as far as I'm concerned, this 07W qualifies as a Wharncliffe . Duh!...why else would there be a "W" in the pattern number?

The wharncliffe blade on this Sharp Fans 2009 club knife by Queen is somewhat unique...or perhaps "extreme" is a more appropriate description. The profile seems to be all "wharn" and no "cliffe"--a real pig-sticker, for sure. Handle is Amber Carved Stag Bone and measures 4" closed.
