I've been toying around with the idea of getting one of these Chuck Garlits 'Happy Jack' Wharncliffe Swaybacks for quite some time but felt the seller's asking price was just a bit too high. After several years on eBay, the seller finally put it up for auction and I happened to snag it (for less than the original asking price, but not by too much).
It's a well-made knife, but has a few funky quirks, like uneven bolsters and an unusual wire-brushed-looking finish on the blade--which also has a very slight "beak" on the tip, almost like a pruning blade. I like the slimness and the precision fit of the blade tang against the backspring when blade is open...nearly invisible intersection line and fingernail barely clicks when run over it. And, I know it's kind of silly, but...I also like the Happy Jack smiley face logo.

Hi QTCut5,
Very nice looking knife you picked up there! You patience has paid off.
And it brings up a question about the shield for you or whoever wants to answer it.
When your Happy Jack is sitting on it's back spring. The smiley appears to be "upside down". I have a Winchester Stagecoach small Stockman (one of my EDC's) with a shield that is turned "upside down" like that. So my question is, are they "upside down" or not? I always thought that someone made a mistake when building my knife & I just told myself "Ok, so it's unique." Is there a correct direction for shields or not?
Thanks in advanced for your time,
Tom
P.S.
How do you catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on him.
(Kinda how you got your unique Happy Jack.)
