Thanks Lyle ::doh:: ... I must have been half asleep when I replied to Jerry's post and got hung up on this blade called a sheepcliffe   - but thanks for posting that blade shape Lyle... indeed it is a sheepcliffe  ... the Case Seahorse no doubt is a wharncliffe and has been around forever from my understanding...

Now that I'm awake Jerry - that is one awesome damascus wharncliffe blade :) ::nod:: ...

Thanks Lee. I just about fell off my chair (and I was sitting on the couch) when I opened that Christmas present.

This is a little Wharncliffe whittler I just picked up. It's a German made knife which I don't normally collect (I normally collect exclusively American made knives) however, I like this pattern so much I had to have it. Providence Cutlery was in business from 1890 - 1915 (per Goins) so it's around 100 years old, in remarkably good condition:

Jerry I agree with LB, that Damascus is terrific! I can imagine being blown away by receiving such a gift. Your daughter made a great choice.

Lyle, at 4" that is a big one. Great knife, and sheepcliff does seem very accurate.

Msteele, that knife has wonderful features, with lovely bone, shield and blades. Is the secondary actually a skinny clip blade or has it been sharpened on the blade back? It looks by the placement of the nail nick that it was intentional, which seems an interesting and uncommon arrangement.

Beechtree, I've looked and looked at that blade and still can't make up my mind on whether or not it's original, there aren't any tell tale swedges to give me a clue. I think it is, but can't be sure. I'm just waiting for another example to give me a hint.

Nice knife msteele6 ::tu:: ... I can relate to picking up knives not in your focus, happens on occasion to me as well... I just can't resist a classic looking old knife especially if it is somewhat unique and/or a desirable pattern in good condition... I would have grabbed the same knife you have if I saw it for sale

Msteele - That is a very fine wharncliffe, and it is in great condition for its age. I can certainly see why you had to have it.

Lyle - I really like that Captain's Rooster. From the first time I saw a photo of one of those it really appealed to me. Here is another example of that pattern.

Longblade, it was called a "Little Carver" when I got it over a year ago. #26, 3 inch closed, but so tight and stout, very thick stock, wide body so it's mega rock solid and tough. Great snap and action, hefty for so small. Great knives. If I ever see another I'll get it.

Nice pickup Jerry ::tu:: ... nice pocket size too ;-)

Has anybody ever seen a jack with a tribal spear master and a wharncliffe secondary blade..... just thinking that would be a cool design and good carry....

Get yourself a S&M File & Wire English Jack like this (kind of expensive and difficult to find) or something similar. Change the profile on the clip blade to Wharncliffe.

Here's one where the guy modified the spear blade but you could easily go the opposite way and modify the clip blade.
