Thanks Floyd & WillyC.
I've always liked the GEC #61 pattern, and those two with the stamped bolsters are a mighty fine pair.
Here's another Case Tony Bose Collaboration Wharncliffe Whittler. This one has Dark Molasses Jigged Bone handles and Damascus Steel blades.

Q I've always thought that 5 is a more rounded number.
Re: Wharncliffe Knives
Gee, Floyd, you sound just like the little devil sitting on my shoulder who keeps whispering the exact same thing into my ear. Truth be told I almost had a fifth one but the little angel sitting on my other shoulder intervened during the final seconds of the auction and saved me from bankruptcy (not to mention certain maritricide) had I won. Nevertheless, you may rest assured the next time I see another GEC Northfield #77 Wharncliffe Yankee Barlow with smooth golden bone handle, I shall hearken unto that little devil and put in an even more obscene, absurd and ridiculously high bid.

Re: Wharncliffe Knives
I may have posted these two previously; but, since I had them out for cleaning & maintenance today I figured I'd snap a couple shots and show them again.

I don't think I've posted this one in this thread yet but I apologize if I already did.
I don't know what Ray Cover calls this pattern but I intend to ask him at the knife show next Saturday.

Words alone fail to describe how gorgeous that knife is. Like timeless art, it communicates directly to the heart and stirs the soul.Railsplitter wrote: ↑Sat Jan 18, 2020 6:13 pm I don't know what Ray Cover calls this pattern but I intend to ask him at the knife show next Saturday.

Re: Wharncliffe Knives
I've been toying around with the idea of getting one of these Chuck Garlits 'Happy Jack' Wharncliffe Swaybacks for quite some time but felt the seller's asking price was just a bit too high. After several years on eBay, the seller finally put it up for auction and I happened to snag it (for less than the original asking price, but not by too much).
It's a well-made knife, but has a few funky quirks, like uneven bolsters and an unusual wire-brushed-looking finish on the blade--which also has a very slight "beak" on the tip, almost like a pruning blade. I like the slimness and the precision fit of the blade tang against the backspring when blade is open...nearly invisible intersection line and fingernail barely clicks when run over it. And, I know it's kind of silly, but...I also like the Happy Jack smiley face logo.

Very nice looking knife you picked up there! You patience has paid off.
And it brings up a question about the shield for you or whoever wants to answer it.
When your Happy Jack is sitting on it's back spring. The smiley appears to be "upside down". I have a Winchester Stagecoach small Stockman (one of my EDC's) with a shield that is turned "upside down" like that. So my question is, are they "upside down" or not? I always thought that someone made a mistake when building my knife & I just told myself "Ok, so it's unique." Is there a correct direction for shields or not?
Thanks in advanced for your time,
Tom
P.S.
How do you catch a unique rabbit?
Unique up on him.
(Kinda how you got your unique Happy Jack.)

Re: Wharncliffe Knives
Thank you, TPK.
Regarding the "upside down" shield question: My theory is that the shield is situated the way it is in order to be in alignment with the blade stamp when the blade is open...which makes sense for viewing and displaying. Although this shield orientation is not the norm, you must admit it does have a certain logic. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that this shield is "right-side-up" and the shields on most other knives are actually the ones that are "upside-down" Just my theory.

So now my shields & my stamps are "upside-down".
Sure, just confuse me. That's easy! lol
