What a great show of knives on these last two pages.

Re: Ulster Collecting
Pearl Cattle knife = Sunday Dress knife, wow, excellent score & beautiful knife. Rare & sought after.
And, a Serpentine Doctor's knife with etch. I have not seen a serpentine one before. Most uncommon pattern.
I feel a bit envious seeing such fine old knives. There are none anywhere in Canada ! (except in the homes of a few collectors)

Paul.... that's a classic lookin' ebony jack with with what looks like nearly full blades. Gettin' tougher to find such gems... way to go....
Mike.... that ram horn whittler looks just like the one I acquired from Roger... he posted it on page 34. Since it turns out yours has the double pulls on the main blade just like mine... the pattern must have been intentionally made this way even though, with mine at least, its too difficult to use the long pull to open the blade, especially with the "bear trap" like spring.
Roger.... that Ulster serpentine doctor's knife in horn handles would stand out in any collection. Nice score!!!

Re: Ulster Collecting
Literally just won this Ulster 63. Should be in the mail to me tomorrow, Monday. This is my first, non-Camillus, Camillus 72 variation that I've obtained. Only obvious "issue" is that the shield is gone. I am going to try and come up with something nice to fill the shield space with, ala Doc B. Click here for Doc's solution: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=62273#p734475
I will post the pictures when I'm done. Here is what it looks like now. The pictures are the seller's.

Just picked it up at the post office. Will give it a gentle cleaning, replace the missing shield and post the "after" pictures.New_Windsor_NY wrote:Literally just won this Ulster 63. Decided to postpone doing anything about the missing shield for now. The after pictures are here: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=62956

Re: Ulster Collecting
Wow, what a beautiful vintage knife. At least 80 years old and it looks close to mint. And, no cracks in pearl. This is a knife that comes with the responsibility of maintaining it's pristine condition. I'm jealous.

Gorgeous knife Joe!FRJ wrote:Here is a nice Ulster whittler.

I bought these two Ulster knives earlier this evening. An Ulster 55D "deer head" pocket knife, which will fit nicely into my menagerie or zoo. I also picked up another Ulster 63, yet another variation of the Camillus 72 and a variation of the Ulster 63 itself. This is my fourth Ulster 63, but my first with the pattern # stamped on the other side of the main tang stamp. The first three pictures are of the Ulster 55D "deer head" knife and the last three pictures are of the Ulster 63. When I receive them, they will get a cleansing if needed. I will post MY pictures in the appropriate location(s). These pictures are the seller's.

Thank you Greg. I really don't know what material the handles are made of. But they are very nice looking.sunknife wrote:Nice ones Skip, I especially like that whittler. Red bone?New_Windsor_NY wrote:My latest two Ulsters. A "55D" and another "63."
The seller said the handles are "bonite."
I entered "bonite" in the search box, under "Quick links" (here on AAPK) and information is definitely available.
I never heard of "bonite" before, I've heard of it now.

Re: Ulster Collecting
Bonite is not a material, it’s a marketing term thought up by the same fellas who introduced us to Staglon and Meerschaum Bone. In the pre-Delrin haze there were a slew of polystyrenes and acetals experimented with. Joseph Foster (the sunglasses guy) was a major player in this arena and was selling his own brand of plastic, Fostarene, to all of the IKAC companies and Camillus at the time. I think Bonite debuted in 1957 or so and I have no evidence, but a strong hunch that it’s Fostarene. Delrin is the only plastic I can think of whose name is used in product descriptions. All other plastics seem to have been branded – like Bonite.New_Windsor_NY wrote:Thank you Greg. I really don't know what material the handles are made of. But they are very nice looking.

Thank you Jason. As usual, not just an answer, but helpful information as well.jxr1197 wrote:Bonite is not a material, it’s a marketing term thought up by the same fellas who introduced us to Staglon and Meerschaum Bone. Re: Ulster Collecting
OK.... I found this Ulster at the gun show last weekend.
I have heard these called... "nutters"... "castration knives" and "rooster nutters" among other names.
SO.... what the heck is the "dangerous" looking blade actually used for?
AND.... what would be a good and proper name for these guys?
Here you go.... What say ye?
