Please help identify Saynor Cooke & Ridal

Post by Cageyone23 »

Hi guys, my first outing in here so take it easy on my utter lack of knowledge.
I have recently been given an old pruning knife from helping someone move house. Apart from what is written on the knife and a few google searches, I've manages to identify it as a
Victorian era Saynor, Cooke and Ridal pruning knife. I also presume it has an ivory handle. That's as far as I have got so far and then I happened on this forum, so was hoping someone with the appropriate knowledge can give some more information. Cheers for taking the time to read this.

Very pretty budding/grafting knife. It could be newer than Victorian since the company is still in business or at least it was when Goins wrote his book. Early 1900s most likely. Elephant ivory handle scales and spud.

Very nice old Saynor Cageyone. Here's an ad from around 1885. These ads were identical up into the very early 1990's:

Not a "pruning" knife, but a Bud Grafting knife as stated above.
"Pruning" knife usually refers to a fairly large knife with a broad curved blade, hollow of the curve is towards the handle, called a "Hawkbill" blade.

The opposite end , without the blade, has the oblong piece of ivory called a spud. Spuds were used to gently pry open the bark to enable a bud to be grafted in,. The dull spud did not damage the stock under the bark. Made usually of nonmetal to be more sterile if memory serves.

Cheers guys, very useful information and such a great community response. In all honesty I am not looking at keeping hold of this knife as I could never appreciate it's beauty like a collector could. I appreciate this isn't the correct part of the forum, but I am looking at selling for a reasonable price. I'm in the UK but happy ship internationally. Failing that does anyone know any good online places to sell here in the UK, eBay does not like the selling of knifes here. Cheers all.

Ebay does not allow the listing of anything with elephant ivory. Also USA has a ban on the importation of ivory. If this knife was shipped to USA and if a Customs Officer opened the package, the knife would be confiscated. I think the chance of it getting opened at Customs is low, but it a slight risk.
I live in Canada and it can legally be shipped here. Send me a PM if you would like to discuss this.

That’s a beautiful and interesting knife, BTW. Any vintage knife person would be pleased to own it.
