Knives in the news
One of my other hobbies is genealogy, and I have spent hours upon hours looking up information on my ancestry tree.Sometimes when I get a little bored of that I switch over to looking up information on Knife Companies articles in old newspapers,I have found lots of information but wasn't able to post it on here until my wife figured out a way to do it,thanks to her for helping me.If you have any newspaper articles ,post them here as they can provide interesting information on how knife companies did business.
The following article I found was about the Phoenix Knife being offered a contract to make a lot of knives.
the newspaper was The Oswego Daily Times Friday Oct. 5th 1894

Re: Knives in the news
This one is interesting ,It is about the New York Knife Co when they were located in Matteawan NY (1852-1856) .The newspaper page was about different companies earning award medals ( not sure what the event was) but New York Knife Co earned a bronze medal for the following.

Very interesting. It’s near impossible to find anything related to NYK Matteawan. The info about pistol knives is new to me. Thanks for posting that.

In the early 1900's Maher and Grosh catalogs had single blade metal handled boy's knives for 42 cents a dozen.48 if you wanted them shipped.knifegnome wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 1:27 am One of my other hobbies is genealogy, and I have spent hours upon hours looking up information on my ancestry tree.Sometimes when I get a little bored of that I switch over to looking up information on Knife Companies articles in old newspapers,I have found lots of information but wasn't able to post it on here until my wife figured out a way to do it,thanks to her for helping me.If you have any newspaper articles ,post them here as they can provide interesting information on how knife companies did business.

Rodger 6 cents for shipping seems a little excessive no?
Kg those grinding wheels sound like a lot of fun. Great idea for a thread though. All the articles I have relate to Honk Falls and Napanoch. Here is another one.

Re: Knives in the news
Really interesting reading about old knife news. What is even more
interesting is the reporting of this in the newspaper.
I remember getting interested in reading the paper 50 years ago.
I wish the papers contained those human interest local stories today.
Thanks for the post!

Just how many knife companies were there in the 1900's?

Ditto what Dale said. I have been trying to use old newspapers for research off and on for the last year or so, particularly in the Walden area. I had a really good website that had a lot of the small village papers from New York state, but failed to bookmark it, and lost it. After a couple of hours of hair pulling and occasional profanity, I found it again last night. Below is a link to it.
http://walden.advantage-preservation.com
Another site that has links to a few old newspaper databases:
http://guides.rcls.org/waldatabases/
In the second one, the newspapers databases can be accessed by clicking on "databases A - Z". There is also a way to get to the first link through this one.
I have also used a site called www.newspapers.com. However, this one needs and account and does not include a lot of the smaller newspapers. A friend from work has an account and lets me access the site through his account.

That is interesting Dan. To answer your question I found those articles just cruising the internet.
Re: Knives in the news
A few more reports of injuries at the Walden Knife Co. All of these are from Warwick newspapers between 1909 and 1919. Also one mixed in there about Walden knives on the Lusitania.

Re: Knives in the news
All the below news listings is from the accumulation of posted news stories from: June 1884, through: January 1927 published from two newspapers, "Gazette & Courier" and "Turner Falls & Reporter." All related to accidents within the John Russell Cutlery Company.
These injuries are written within the book. I am sure that many other accidents occurred at JRCC but just never made it in print.
The book is also a wonderful guide to the history of John Russell Cutlery.

the website is Fultonhistory.com ,I sometimes have trouble getting on the website, when you get on the correct site it will have a goldfish swim across the screen a stick his tongue out at you.You then click to do a search,at the left will be a search area , below it I search for" the exact words",then enter what your looking for and click " search". You will get zero to a thousand hits.Select a newspaper and it will show up on the screen to the right, the words you searched for should be highlighted in color (but not always). Owner is Tom Tryniski and it is free to use.
