Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
This eBay auction ended without a sale.
The item has not been relisted (as of this posting). I'm posting this strictly for future reference.
This is not my pocket knife. These are the seller's pictures and they have not been edited.
The auction was for a ROBESON - ShurEdge - U.S.A., fob/key ring pattern pocket knife.
It is identical to the ROBESON that was posted on the previous page.

Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
Very recently, I acquired the pocket knife pictured below. It is a "THE W.&H.CO - NEWARK,N.J.", 2 blade (1 is broken), single spring, 2 tang stamps pocket knife. It measures 3 1/8" closed. It advertises "CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL COMPANY" on both sides. The two tang stamps on this particular pocket knife are the curved lettering tang stamps that are shown on ALL of the SINGLE BLADE pocket knives that were previously posted in this topic/thread, EXCEPT FOR THE ROBESON. But, unlike the other tang stamps, there is NO "USA" in the middle of either of these two tang stamps. So, what knife company made this pocket knife? I have no idea, but I'm leaning towards ROBESON. This pocket knife needed cleaning. I cleaned it, took some pictures and here it is. The last picture, for comparison, is of the tang stamp that is on ALL the SINGLE BLADE fob/pocket knives that were previously posted in this topic/thread, BUT NOT THE ROBESON.

Very cool knife Skip. Also neat it is a Promo Knife for one of the oldest Pneumatic tool companies in the U.S. I've had a lot of experience with a lot of different CP products. They produce not only pneumatic tools, but a variety of equipment. Air compressors, Industrial generators, tools and drill bits all the way up to those used for oil drilling. They had many contracts with the government for supplying a big variety of equipment. A lot of our impact wrenches and air drills were Chicago Pneumatic. I believe they have been in business for about 120 years now.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 7:49 pm Very recently, I acquired the pocket knife pictured below. Thank you Smitty.
I used many pneumatic tools during my career with Ma Bell.
I don't remember what company manufactured them,
could've been Chicago.
Thanks again for the historical info.

I know that I already posted the following and then deleted it. Long story......
The title of the ad is just slightly wrong. It DOES have the curved "W & H" tang
stamp. Anyway, this sale has ended. But it wasn't sold to me. I'm posting the
following items for future reference. The pocket knife is not mine. The pictures
are the seller's and have NOT been edited or altered in any fashion.

Today I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade fob/pocket knife to my collection. This is the second fob/pocket knife advertising this particular company, "THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO.", that I've obtained. I cleaned it up a little, took some pictures and here it is.

Awesome knife Skip!! Interesting tidbit of information on this company. At one time Norman Rockwell worked for the company as a design artist.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 7:20 pm Today I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade fob/pocket knife to my collection. Yesterday, I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade, 3" closed, all metal fob/key ring pocket knife to my collection. It has a patent date of October 29, 1912. This is my first fob/key ring pocket knife advertising this particular company, "CENTRAL SUPPLY COMPANY - INDIANAPOLIS", that I've obtained. This is my second fob/key ring pocket knife that is in this particular pattern or style. The Christmas greeting is a bonus. Could this be another clue linking ROBESON to the manufacturing process of these "W & H" fob/key ring pocket knives? My investigation continues. It didn't need to be cleaned. I took some pictures and here it is.

Yesterday, along with the fob/key ring pocket knife that's in the previous post, I added this "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade, 2 1/2" closed, all metal fob/key ring pocket knife to my collection. This is the third fob/key ring pocket knife advertising this particular company, "ABSORENE MFG CO.", that I've obtained. But it is the first "ABSORENE" fob/key ring pocket knife, in this particular pattern or style, that I've obtained. The other two "ABSORENE" fob/key ring pocket knives have been previously posted. Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
This morning, I added this, "UNKNOWN", single blade, 3" closed, all metal fob/key ring pocket knife to my collection. It has "Patented" on the ring/loop. It has a long pull. I can't make out the first word in the advertising on the one side of the handle. It says "M??????? BUSINESS MEN'S - ACCIDENT & HEALTH ASS'N - ST LOUIS MO." The other side says "OWNER'S NUMBER REGISTERED - RETURN AND RECEIVE REWARD." The number is 1604. Maybe the first word is MISSOURI? If the first word in the advertising is MISSOURI, the last picture is the only information that I could find on this company. Could this fob/key ring pocket knife be another clue linking ROBESON to the manufacturing process of these "W & H" fob/key ring pocket knives? Or, is this yet another, different, cutlery company that is involved? I don't know because I can not read the tang stamp, or what remains of a tang stamp. It may just be my eyes playing tricks on me and there are no remains of a tang stamp. Anyway, my investigation continues. It didn't need to be cleaned. I took some pictures and here it is.

Nope. I had just gotten through going through the previous three pages right before I posted. I also like the W&H putty knives / Scrapers and whatever the cylindrical handle was. You've only done a group photo of all the ones on page one. One more page full, and I think you should do another. Just my opinion.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 11:43 pmThank you Smitty.

Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
This is my latest Whitehead & Hoag pocket knife acquisition. It is a "THE W & H Co. - NEWARK NJ", "CHERRY RIPE", two blades (one is broken), 2 1/8" closed pocket knife. On the handle, it features two women wearing period clothing. I have to research "CHERRY RIPE" (besides the obvious "risqué" meaning). The broken blade stub is interesting because it is two "layers." It looks like there is a pivot pin, with some remaining metal, on the broken blade tang (the last picture). Could it have been a tool, instead of a blade? This example has the "block" style tang stamp. So far, it is the third style and the least common of the tang stamps for the "W & H" pocket knives that I've found. So, which cutlery company manufactured this style of pocket knife for the "W & H" company? I don't know and the investigation continues. However, from what I've seen/found so far, Whitehead & Hoag items with female and or "risqué" images are not very common at all. On this one, the remaining blade needed a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

The broken blade was likely a manicure blade. I have seen this type of blade construction on some smaller Colonial knives although I doubt they made that knife. Here are a couple pics of the Colonial file blade.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 7:49 pmThe broken blade stub is interesting because it is two "layers." Would the 'risque' side have been the front or back side ? If it is the front side then it is the master blade that is broken off. Other 'risque' knives i have seen, the pictures are on the front side.

I'm guessing that the side with the image(s) is the back of the pocket knife.
I believe that the surviving blade IS the main blade.
I agree with knife7knut, aka Ray, that the broken stub (with pivot pin) was for a tool, not a blade.
