Here are a few celluloids. Despite not really looking for them I seem to have accumulated a few celluloids, mostly while in pursuit of certain patterns, plus a few others that were too good to pass up. Some colorful, some imitation pearl.

Thanks Joe. I don’t usually chase celluloids unless there’s other redeeming aspects (whittlers, swell-center, rare stamp, or cheap! for example). That Wilbert being a gunstock whittler with punch secondary tripped my trigger.

Wow! You guys sure have some beautiful celluloid.
The knives being shown here are quite attractive and make me want to add some celluloid-handled knives to my collection; however, due to some pretty bad outgassing issues I've had in the past, I tend to avoid celluloid. (Once bitten, twice shy!)

I admit I am somewhat ignorant about celluloid as evidenced by these two questions I have about it:

1) Is there any way to keep celluloid from outgassing, i.e., storage methods, sealants, frequent cleaning, etc.?

2) How can you tell the difference between celluloid and other synthetic materials such as acrylic?

I just picked up this Fight'n Rooster that I believe is celluloid, but I'm not 100% certain. (I apologize in advance if my knife is not old enough to qualify for this thread since it is for "Traditional Knives From the Old Days", but I honestly have no idea how old it is or what the minimum age requirement is to be considered old enough.)

One more question: Are the tarnish spots on the bar shield & pins evidence of early-stage outgassing, and should I be concerned?

I don't believe there is anyway to stop outgassing.
If you rub the handles briskly you will get a camphor smell. When you've looked at enough celluloid you know it when you see it compared to acrylic or other synthetics.
Yes it appears your knife is outgassing.

Some of the newer (50 years or so old) like Fight'n Rooster and Winchester remakes are more prone to outgas than earlier ones. I've had some of these more recent ones start and I've cleaned them with metal polish and displayed them out in the open for a number of years (noy around any knives they could contaminate) and enjoyed them until they seriously started to decompose and before they caused any significant damage to the knife, and then I pried off the scales for new bone or stag. I store the old ones in a safe that stays cool and dark and check on them every couple months or so, and none of them have had any issues. Old Westerns from the 50's or 60's that have cracked ice handles seem to outgas a little more often than other celluloids, so I watch them a little closer.____Dave

QTCut5, that is a beautiful Fighting Rooster. I also believe that it is beginning to outgas.
Sit it in a shelf away from other knives if you can until you have it rehandled. It is a shame, but will be even worse if it destroys the whole knife.
I may be biased, but "newer" German celluloid (1970 and newer) seems to outgas worse than older celluloid, and do more internal damage to the knife. That is just my opinion, but I see a lot of 'em being sold on eBay. Too many.
I have bought a few, and often they are too damaged to restore.
