A Black and White Unit

Post by OLDE CUTLER »

I have had this 3 and 1/2" Keen Kutter jack laying on the end of the bench for a couple of years while keeping an eye out for a parts knife or blade that may come along to fix it. Finally decided, its not going to happen. So I went ahead and made a new Wharnecliffe blade and found a bottle opener blade from another Keen Kutter and made a beer knife out of it. While in the process of rummaging thru the box of handle material, I found 2 pieces that would fit. One was Black paper micarta, and one was ivory paper micarta. So I said "what the heck" and went ahead and used those two pieces. Some of you may remember back in the day when Dragnet was on TV. Sgt Friday would call on the radio for a back up "black and white unit". I happened to think of that while I was fitting the micarta onto this knife. One of the original blades was worn out and the other was broken. The bone handle material was also worn out. We also have this kitty named Annabelle that lives with us that we refer to as

The "black and white unit."

OC, I like the little cat and the "black&white" Keen Kutter, a great rebuild!
I do remember that term from the old TV shows. Here in Florida the basic state trooper cars are called "Black & Tans" by some folks. Back when I was a kid it always made me think of the deer and coon hounds by that name. ::hmm::

Nice job. The Wharncliffe looks great.

Nice job on the knife!
I am not a big fan of cats, but that cat has something very special going for it, It lives at your house not mine, (& it's not making My eyes itch!) ::tu::

Great save, terrific job, and a great story OC! Thanks for sharing. It's always rewarding to save an HOK like that one with parts that just happen to be on hand. ::tu:: ::tu::

Thanks to all for the comments. I neglected to mention the reason that I did not install a nail nick or pull on the blade, preferring instead to let the Wharnecliffe "sit up" and use the pinch method for opening.

Great end product. Those knives with two different handles are sometimes called magicians knives. I really like the blade combination you used. Nice restoration. ::tu::
