On Deck - Schrade Walden Uncle Henry Trapper

Post by Jeffinn »

The holidays kept me away from the workshop. Then I came down with a vicious respiratory virus that took me out of action for about 10 days. Today was my first opportunity to get downstairs to the workshop.
I purchased a Schrade Walden Uncle Henry trapper off of the bay. The price was fair and the blades were in decent shape. The auction photos didn’t show that the knife had milled liners so that was a definite plus,

I did some preliminary cleanup of the bolsters and added a rat tail groove. It needs a little finishing but it’s good for now,

A little cleanup of the liner and added a stamp to identify it,

And I like to clean up the inner surface of the springs so they look nice when you look in the knife blade well. FYI, you may see a raised spot on the spring that looks like a spot weld (you can see it in the spring photo). Don’t remove it, it’s there to keep the blade at the required height when closed. It’s not present on all manufacturer springs but I do see it from time to time. The goal (for me anyway), is just to give the spring surface a clean finished look,

I haven’t settled on a handle material yet. It needs to be just over 3.25” and the only thing I currently have in that size is smooth black bone. I haven’t convinced myself that black is the right color for this one so I may be placing an order with Culpepper before I finish this one.
I’ll post again once I figure out the handle material.

Great idea! I haven’t worked with Rams horn yet so it might be time to give it a try.
Thanks!
Jeff

I like the 'bright' colored smooth bone you have used previously. It really 'brightens' up the knife.

The smooth bone in red or hunter green has been pretty nice so it’s definitely another option (not sure what I have left so I’ll have to check the bone box).
Thanks.
