Repairing a vintage Carbon Steel Chef Knife
Forgive me if I’m in the wrong section, or forum entirely, but I have an old carbon steel chef knife and the wood handle is off and the tang is cracked in two. If I were to use the cracked piece or even a new piece, what would be the best way of attaching it? Or could this even be done?

Hi, welcome to AAPK! When asking questions it is helpful to provide photos. I am sure there are folks here who have run across your problem before but if you could provide a photo of the broken tang it would be helpful.

How close to the blade is the crack in the tang ? If there is about 3" of intact tang then you can put on new handle slabs. The tang does not have to extend all the way to the butt end of the handle.

If there is three inches of tang left that would be enough to have the remainder electric welded back on without damaging the blade. Like I said, photos would help determine the best path.

Lol! Sorry all, my friend has the knife currently but attached is a photo of it pre-breakage, with a line where it broke. hopefully, I did this right.

So tang broke where the center handle pin goes through.
Is the blade still stable or can it be moved up & down a little ?
It is a good looking Chef's knife.

It's just slightly past it. My (hopeful) plan was to cut out a piece of steel to the shape of the half of the tang that broke, weld/attach it somehow and add a new handle. That's a nice knife. Is there a makers mark?
Did the tang taper in thickness toward the butt?
It would be a plus if you could get a usable knife out of your efforts.
There are lots of good unbroken knives like yours to be had from other sources.
I will say, knives like that can be kind of pricey.

As the blade is "completely stable" why not leave it as it is and use it ? i.e. does it actually need fixing at this point ?

It’s an old Case/Wear ever chefs knife. The tang does taper toward the butt. Does that make a difference?
It’s a collection piece and I was hoping to attach and shape to the tang and apply a new handle carved by myself.

A tang extension could be welded on then ground to the proper shape and thickness. Then you would rehandle it in your choice of material.
