Pair of Cammy Streamliners Ready to Set Sail

Post by herbva »

I fished these 2 Camillus Streamliners off the bay a while back. As you can see in the first pic, they were in obvious signs of celluloid outgassing distress when I received them. But, I love this pattern and thought they had potential. I did one in some kind of smooth orange bone that was part of the leftover inventory when Queen closed and the other one is smooth hunter green from Culpepper. The pen on the orange one has a bad splotch of pitting on the mark side, but that's the way it is. The one I did in green had the better blades, but the liners actually looked worse when I got the knife apart. They looked a bit "eaten up" by the outgassing, but I thought they would hold up with new scales on them. WRONG! When I reassembled this one, inserted the rocker pin and released the pressure on the springs, one side gave up and the spring actually pushed the rocker pin through the back of the liner. (There's a first for everything.) It even blew through the new scale on that side. So disassembly, make new liners, redo everything and here they are. I made the new liners out of .032" sheet brass (.88mm) which is why the green one may look a bit thicker to you. It is. It's actually a nice, heavy, sturdy feeling knife now. I won't mess around with damaged liners again!

Beautiful work Herb! ::tu:: I really like when builders use thicker brass liners, so I never need to worry about covers shrinking and pulling the liners with them. Also, like the extra weight. 8)

Excellent work, Herb. ::tu:: ::tu::

I'll have to show you the one I picked up from an AAPK member that wasn't scaled in Celluloid and has a spear main on Saturday.

Excellent work!!! That’s such a neat pattern to begin with and you’ve really made them pop with that bone. Very nice!
