I thought that looked like pine. Your explanation makes a lot of sense to me. Several years ago I helped my Dad tear down, move, and restore several old log houses. There is a HUGE difference in the weight and longevity of old heart pine versus the lightweight stuff harvested today.
Many people claim that you should only use hardwoods for knife scales, but I put Red Cedar on my first rehandled knife and it has held up great. My Dad rehandled an old Camillus in cedar before I was born:. My older sister had played with the knife in the kitchen (playing "house"), and left it in the oven. My Mom turned on the stove and melted off the original plastic handles. Dad carried that knife for over 30 years afterward with no problems or unusual wear to the soft wood.

Your knife not only looks great, but could very well last for generations!
