Patching a handle
You'll often find a nice slipjoint with once beautiful bone handles, but lo and behold, one of the slabs will be busted. Usually you can pick these up quite cheap. I would rather patch a nice bone handle, than replace it with wood or horn becuase you are retaining more of the original knife. Such is the case with this vintage VOOS jack, beautiful bone, but the mark handle was busted right down the middle. Here is a sequence of photos of my process
Here is what we have to work with, the broken handle and a boken handle from a parts knife that should match close in color and jig pattern once worked down.
It needs a bit of fitting
getting closer
now I flatten the side of both handles so they butt up flush with little or no gap.
I notch the piece so it will fit around the pins and glue it on
a little filing, sanding and polishing and viola a nearly invisible patch. nowq she's ready for the pocket.

Careful with that flash superglue they make, dries in 1 - 5 seconds. (yeah right, so I thought). I can tell you that it DOES dry in 1 to 5 seconds. Got some on one finger and tried to wipe it off on my leather shop apron. Well, my finger got glued to my shop apron. It does dry FAST!muskrat man wrote:thanks everyone for the comments.

Re: Patching a handle
thanks jeffery, I do not just use jut bone pieces to patch nowadays. I use resins and dyes and all kinds of different stuff to patch handles with. Each knife is special and will require a certain kind of patch depending on handle material and color.
