All About Pocket Knives

I picked up this main beam for less than what one set of scales would cost.
Sliced off a section and split it. Layed out scales and cut them to profile. Had to sand the back side to get them flat.
Dyed with some amber stain.
Will post pics later when installed on a knife.

By "Red Stag" do you mean antler from the European Red Deer ? If so how does it get in to USA ? I was stopped from entering USA because i had an elk antler in my vehicle. I would have needed special permits that take months to obtain
I have a few elk antlers but the surface is not as textured as the antler you show even though the 2 species are closely related. I have been told that elk antler is softer than Sambar stag and thus it wears smooth much quicker.
Does the piece of stag you have seem fairly dense ?

I’m not aware of issues with owning/selling red stag here in the states. For a considerable sum of money one can actually hunt imported red stag in the state of Texas. This beam was actually on a table at a flea market.

Sometimes it is best not to ask, or show excitement for an item. Especially if the price is not marked beforehand.

I have some elk sheds as well. This pith on the stag is less dense, but the outer layer is harder to cut than the elk.

Thanks Tony. I did not know there were any European Red Deer in USA. The game farm in Texas could be where this antler came from. It looks more attractive than elk. I bet other knife makers would love to use Red Deer antler.

Roland, you can hunt just about any plains game at the ranches here in Texas. Photo safari's as well. They have imported just about everything. I had not thought of them as a source for horns or antlers.
