file work, how I did it.
This is a series of pictures of the steps I took to create some filework. Hope it helps someone. I dreaded the first attempt because I hadn't thought it all out but now I can see my way clear and hope these pics encourage more people to try. Any critique, comments, criticisms or other ideas are weicome since I am just starting out on this.

- color the work surface with thick layer of felt tip marker or dye. Mark using divider/compass

- Start a small groove at each mark using a half round file, very important to be accurate and start file almost flat on working surface.

- check work often with dividers to ensure accuracy

- make grooves deeper using triangle needle file

- now use round needle file to make grooves as deep as half the stock and at 45 deg angle to work surface.

- do same thing exactly half way between opposite side notches

- using halfround needlefile cut groove right next to u shape and same depth as round groove.

Forgot to note that all work after the u shaped notches is done goes toward the blade end of the spring. So on one side of the surface you are working to the left of the u notch and on the other you are working just the opposite.

so...eyes, vice, file, magic marker. and part.....i think i pratice on the metal pile outside prior to mungin' up a part i might not be able to replace...

I was gonna try that, but I'm scared! One o' these days, though........
