Knife Review Pass? Review and Pass to next.

Post by TripleF »

Couple years ago we did a knife review with CASE XX fixed blade hunting knife. The knife was named GRIZ and I still have her today.

Now, I'm looking for some more volunteers who will help complete a "use and report review" here on AAPK and pass to another member.
You'll execute actions you would normally execute with any other fixed blade knife.

The knife up for review is the ESTWING USA Bowie Knife 4".

Re: Knife Review Pass? Review and Pass to next.

Post by jerryd6818 »

Towards the end of July, I started a thread ( http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... ng#p516605 ) asking if anyone had one of these. Since no one had one I took it upon my self to contact Estwing [headquartered right here in Rockford, IL] and enquired if we (AAPK & Scott) could get one to review. Laura, the young lady at Estwing I talked to made it happen and sent the knife to Scott for review on his blog (in process) and an AAPK pass around to see if impressions meet expectations.

If you're a hunter (and there are several on the forum) please give it a shot. There is no obligation to give the knife a lengthy review or to even give it a good review, just an honest review. What can it cost you other than a little time you would be spending in the field anyway and the postage to send it to the next guy in line.

We frequently complain about knives made off-shore and moan that there are currently so few knives made in the USA. Well here's one that is made right here in Rockford, IL U.S.A. Try it. There is a possibility you may like it in spite of the "futuristic look".

You know....it's funny Jerry, that you mention futuristic look, as the knife handled immediately made me think of SPOCK from Star Trek!!!

Spock or the USS Enterprise? It's not an original thought. That comment was plagiarized from the post made in the original thread by Ken in Alaska.

O.K. I'm in.
With reservations, cause to me this is not a pretty knife.
But it IS made in the USA, and it does look like it might be pretty good at both skinning and wood-splitting'

AND it IS almost deer season.....

Does this knife have an integral handle?

PM on the way!

I could give 'er a whirl on the farm, not sure about whitetail hunting this year. Are the dimensions for the knife 4" blade or overall? Seems big for small game from the picture. Also, with the cut-out handle design it looks like it's not full tang?

Seems big for small game from the picture. --- If you still feel that way once you get it in hand, put that in your review.
Also, with the cut-out handle design it looks like it's not full tang? --- The tang is the handle. It's a skeleton knife, there are no scales/covers. Handle might be more comfortable wrapped in Paracord.
Many thanks to those who have stepped up and volunteered so far.

We named the Case fixed blade "Griz". I think we should name the Estwing, "Rocky". Like the original Rocky, no one believes in him and he's a real underdog. (And then there's the Rockford, IL connection.)

Rather than close the sign up time so soon, Scott, you might extend it a bit, let folks see this and even reference the story of Griz ::shrug:: . I'd like to have a go just like we did with Griz. But I won't need the knife till after the 1st of the year as our rut runs January and February. By then most states hunting seasons have already closed. I think I was last on the Griz list. That was an interesting continuing story of Griz's travels around the country!

Since Scott passed the baton to me on this, I don't see why not Philip. Rocky currently has no permanent home and has a flexible schedule, we should be able to make that happen.

So I can get a good feel for a schedule that will maximize Rocky's use, Please PM your mailing address to me along with the time frame you will most likely be in the field.

I'm extending the sign up for this pass around until it runs out of steam. Talked to Scott this morning and he agreed, instead of sending your contact information to Scott, send it to me. So if you get a wild hair to try out Rocky, let me know.

Well, here's old Rocky!
Fresh outa the pack.
IMG_2455.JPG
First impressions:
Not my cup of tea, aesthetically.
Blade too short and handle too - funky
The uncleaned flashing and shiny paint gives one the impression of a knife found at Walmart.
I like the one-piece construction. I doubt Rocky's gonna break on me.
HEAVY! I need to weigh, and update.
Balance is too far back on the handle - about one inch. I prefer from 1/2 inch, or further forward on the blade.
Rocky rattles in the sheath. This could be an issue on a hunting trip.
IMG_2456.JPG
The little pointy end on the handle looks like it might be used as a nifty glass-breaker. I didn't have any glass, but I did poke some holes in the USPS box!
IMG_2457.JPG
Then followed up with a little bit of box cutting. Either the blade is too thick or Rocky needs sharpening. I think a little time on the LANSKY might be in order. He did get the job done though.
IMG_2458.JPG
more to come.

Coupla more pics:

Rocky cuts through plastic like it's plastic! Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
IMG_2459.JPG
Notice the thick blade. This can be very useful for a camping or general utility knife.
Definitely could be used as a prybar, or an entrenching tool.
IMG_2460.JPG
I tried cutting an old hide unsuccessfully, but I think the blade needs sharpening. I'll give it another try after sharpening.
Honestly I must say that my relationship with Rocky has started out rather - well - rocky.

Well, I've spent a week with ol' Rock and I reckon it's time to send him on his way.
I didn't get to try to skin a fresh deer with him, because I spent most of my week either at work, or running back and forth to check on my Dad at the hospital.
He has Alzheimer's and is in a bad way... ::td::

I found a couple of good uses for Rocky. He makes a good mini prybar. I opened up a couple of shipping crates this week using only the blade.
He does make short work of pruning away the vines growing around the house.
IMG_2513.JPG
And I used paracord to tie Rocky to a broom handle and make a spear. ACTUALLY, he made a pretty good spear! ::tu::

It only took me 372 whacks to cut this stake in half. (yep I counted)
IMG_2512.JPG
In summary, I think Rocky is still the underdog.
Not pretty.
Too heavy.
Cheap looking paint (too glossy)
Poorly finished.
Poorly balanced.
Blade is too short to use as a hatchet,
and too thick to make a good skinner.
Noisy - rattles in the sheath.

He does make a good spear,
a good mini prybar,
he does O.K. with small tasks around the yard.

Thanks to Estwing, TripleFFF, and JerryD for putting this knife pass together.
I wish I had better things to say about the challenger.

So, .... HET HET HET.
ROCKY 1 is finis...
Who's next? It's time for ROCKY 2!
