Dating a Cattaraugus
Dating a Cattaraugus
I know the Cattaraugus knives are difficult to date since they are basically the same for the entire run - 1886-1963. However, I was hoping someone on here who is far more knowledgeable and experienced than I am may be able to narrow it down some by the style, type, etc. It, of course, reads "Cattaraugus (arched) Cutlery Little Valley" - I know it has ebony wood scales, and I'm assuming the blades have incurred some filing down over the years, but I've looked, and I can't find this particular shield shape. I've seen some artwork of some Cattaraugus knives in early 1900s newspapers, and it's a different shield, so I'm thinking this one may have come sometime later? Anyway, any wisdom regarding this knife would be appreciated.

Wish I could help but I'm not a bit sure it is possible to pin this down much. I call that shield a bowtie shield and the pen blade has a big kick. I think the big kick dates your knife to the early 1930s or earlier.
Maybe someone will come along with better or more info.

I've had several with that tang stamp, according to my late husband's notes, 20's era.

Here's a 1920's Cattaraugus catalog reprint with your knife.(22276) The estimate for a mint condition knife in 2000 was $150. As yours is far from mint I couldn't guess it's value. Nice survivor though. J.O'.

Very helpful! Thanks everyone! What a shame the blades have been filed down so much, because the scales and bolsters are in excellent condition!

I think I have the 22286, no stamped pattern number on mine.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!
