Judson fixed

Post by Diamond »

Any information available about this "Judson Cutlery Co. New York Made in Germany" fixed blade just liberated from the obscurity of my FnL's workbench?

Not one I have ever heard of but Goins says it was in business from 1890 to 1910.

In deference to your advanced age Diamond, we'll give you a sittin' post. :D

Nice looking straight knife. Always nice to see someone show up with something that a dozen others don't have. Thanks for showing it.

Hi folks. I am new to the forum. I am responding to inquiries about Judson Cutlery. I have a “bowie” shaped hunting knife ,with beautiful stag scales, that is obviously very old. It is a Judson Cutlery marked piece. However, it is marked Checzeslovakia (sp?), not Germany. Anyone have any ideas as to date on this one?

If Goins says they went out of business in 1910 and that knife is marked Czechoslovakia, something is not right. Czechoslovakia wasn't even a country until after WW1 in 1918. C. Houston Price and Levine both say Judson was 1900-1940 so, made somewhere in that range. Here's a "Boy's" Barlow by Judson. Good luck with it. ::handshake:: J.O'.

Ridge grass, thanks for the info. If what you are saying is correct, then the knife would have been made between 1918 and 1940 according to Levine and Voyles. And could not have been made there according to Goins. While Goins is a trusted authority ( I have his books), Voyles and Levine ( have their books as well)
are also well noted. I have worked personally with Levine in the past on a rare and hard to verify “Bowie” and he was able to piece the history all together.
I have to assume that there must have been some difference in historical findings between the guys. Being that I have the physical knife and markings are quite clear, that Levine and Voyles may be more correct on this one. Would love to be able to narrow it down even more. Thanks for the response to a new member!

I meant Price where Voyles is inserted. Sorry for the error.
