Tang stamp help.

Post by NAllen731 »

I assume this is a German knife since both blades are stamped Rostfrei. Does anyone know the maker?

That ring with five arrows is the mark of Muller & Schmidt of Solingen (1896 - 1999). The company and logo (there were several variations of the logo) are described in German Knife and Sword Makers by J. Anthony Carter.

It appears that there are sets of numbers, just below the bale.
I tried to enlarge your picture below.

Likely a date engraved after knife was purchased. Perhaps as a gift or award.

Thanks for the help. The numbers under the bail are 26. VI. 38. June, 26 1938?

It could be a 1938 knife with stainless steel blades even though it somehow looks newer.

I agree it looks to nice to be from that era. I purchased it with 3 other knives known to be from that same period, 2 Empires which closed in 1930 according to Goin's and a Schrade Cut Co. which was only used by Schrade until 1946. All of them are in the same condition as this one.

This logo is actually that of C.W.Hass and was registered in 1922. (Anthony Carter pg 229)
"Muller & Schmidt" mentioned above have a very similar looking logo.

I believe Roland has nailed it. The Muller & Schmidt mark is almost identical but apparently should have the words "AUTO. TOOL" between the two rings.

Curious that the marks should be so similar. It looks like the companies were in adjacent cities (Solingen and Remscheid). I wonder if there was some affiliation?
