Looks Japanese all right. Most of those are made by Mitsuboshi.

Yes those knives came from Japan likely 1950's or early 1960's. There are 3 sizes: small, large & very large. Yours looks like the small one.
I think they are significant because they show the beginning of Japan manufacturing recovering from WW II devastation. By 1980's, roughly 25 years later, Japan was making some of the best knives in the world.

I got this last weekend. It seems to have the same oversized diamond jigging, although mine has colour added. I think the scales might be actual bone.
I can see ‘Japan’ but everything above it is worn off, although there might be the ghost of a diamond shaped logo.
Now I wonder if they could be related?

My two. They are not a very well refined knives and not worth much, monetarily...but KJ does make an interesting observation on the time and events surrounding their manufacture. Sorry, a little fuzzy...
