Joseph Rodgers knife

Post by Ben Ogle »

Does anyone know how to date this Joseph Rodgers knife, and maybe give a value?

We will need more info regarding the blade markings to be able to offer any suggestion

Even then you'll get a 'period' at best rather than a date

Are there any initials under a crown?? Like VR,ER,or GR? These marks are for who was ruler of England at the time and give a fairly good idea of age.

I do not believe that is a Joseph Rodgers knife. I think the knife was made in India where they made a lot of knives with marks similar to Rodgers marks on one side but not the other. The cross on this one is not a Rodgers cross, it is way crude and the real Rodgers ones are crisp and symmetrical. The Indians were still using bogus Rodgers marks at least into the 1960s and there are a lot of them that have "No 6 Sheffield Steel" on one side and the star and cross on the other. The number 6 referring of course to the "Number 6 Norfolk Street" on old Rodgers knives.

Thanks for your reply Gunsil, but I have a hard time believing this is not a joseph Rodgers knife. The markings are to much alike. I've never heard of the Indian knives with those markings. Thanks for your input, I will definitely look into the knives made in india

Please take our learned word for it, that is not a Joseph Rodgers knife.

Really.

Rodgers' quality far excels that of your knife.

Not trying to rain on your pride or anything. It's just the facts.

Thats an interesting piece all the same and quite possibly from the period. Even in England it wasn't unknown for different cutlers to try and sell their blades on the back of Rodgers and Sons

difficult to tell from the pictures but it doesn't look poorly put together?

@Corso, you are right. It's not poorly made. That is what led me to believe it was an authentic Joseph Rodgers. But now I see. It is still very interesting to me. I would still like to be able to know a time period.
