Any idea? Large lock back sodbuster style.

Post by Nifenoworky »

I need some help identifying this knife. Looks like there was some etching on blade at one time but can't make anything out. Any help would be appreciated. Seems like a quality built knife.

I have (or did have) very similar knives with the same 'hook' at the end of the handle that were made in Germany and in Japan.
If you use a loupe and carefully go over the blade you might find some evidence of a marking that you won't see with eyes alone.

Kj... I was suspecting (maybe more hoping) German. Do you happen to remember any brand names of the knives you had that were similar?

Where on the blade would a Kabar 1179 be marked ?
As to German manufacturers this pattern was made by more than just one Solingen manufacturer.
What is the exact closed length ?
I recently sent my knife that closely resembles OP knife to a USA ebay seller. When he lists it i will provide the link.

I agree with Steve, it’s a Kabar 1179. Here’s one I picked up a while back in a lot with some other knives. Nice knife but somebody had no clue how to sharpen it.

Interesting to see that "Ka-bar" is a relatively faint etch rather than a marking stamped into the steel. As i stated above the same pattern has been made in Germany & Japan. It is possible, even likely that Ka-bar copied a German made knife as this style of simple clasp knife goes back to 1800's in Germany. ?
Did Ka-bar usually etch their name on a blade rather than hot stamping it ?
If they usually hot stamped do you think this could be a blade that Ka-bar imported rather than making it themselves ?

WOW talk about coincidence ....
I bought that exact knife at a flea recently, and wondered what it was, too.
I thought I saw one like it on ebay inked kabar. Never got around to a picture and asking here ...
Now I know !!

Picked it up for $10 still had the leather thong. After I got it home I realized one side of
the birds-eye rivet was broken. Put aside for awhile.
Over this weekend I mic'd the pin and drilled the hole for a machine screw.
Ground and filed the nut and I have a usable knife ... my first knife repair.

THANK YOU for the answer guys !

I've got 2 of them. Here is an old price guide I found. The entire guide
can be found at www.kabar.com

For whatever unknown reason, Kabar never tang stamped this pattern, just a blade etch with KABAR And the mode #.

Well, it works, and it's not that bad. Plus, you didn't have to pin it.

Various knifemaking part retailers sell all sorts of screw fixtures for knives. I have a Herder that had a bum compression rivet form the factory, and an Italian made Scout-type knife which I blew out the bird's eye pin on drilling a hole in a board with its awl. I will likely try screw pivots since I still need to learn how to pin.
