C Platts & Sons Legit or Frankenknife?
C Platts & Sons Legit or Frankenknife?
C Platts & Sons, Gowanda NY tang stamp which would date the knife to 1896-1897 BUT the blades look too good.
Have new blades been welded to the old tang/frame?

Welcome here, Boji,
I would say the knife blades have not been welded but have been cleaned sufficiently on that beautiful old
congress whittler. Nice one!

That was my first thought but after reading some of the posts here about counterfeited Platts knives I got worried!

I like that pattern, and to AAPK!
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

I don't know. The main blade looks too perfect compared to the tang and the two smaller blades.
You probably could not know for sure without having the knife in hand.

First congress of any brand that I have ever seen with a spear master blade.
Re: C Platts & Sons Legit or Frankenknife?
In person the small blades are just as shiny and perfect as the master.

Re: C Platts & Sons Legit or Frankenknife?
Thank you. It has probably just been polished, and you normally can't polish the tang as much as the blades. If that is the case, they buffed it well without rounding off the swedges.
From the pictures I see no evidence of welding. It is very hard for anyone to weld on a blade without leaving evidence of it.

I don't like it for $595.

I think some people are missing the significance of Steve's post.knifeaholic wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 11:13 pm First congress of any brand that I have ever seen with a spear master blade.

Re: C Platts & Sons Legit or Frankenknife?
I like everything about the knife with the exception of the spear blade. The spear is very full and clean with no evidence of use or wear. All blades cleaned and use evident overall to include everything but the spear. Spear pull looks off to me as well with rounding and what looks like some depth change at the ends. Could be okay but I am not confident in that.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

It appears almost as if the long pull on the master blade has been machined with a ball mill.

Would have been nice if all the negative comments would have been made before I listed it.
The pictures here are the same as the eBay listing.
Any way, too late now, mailed it out this afternoon. And no, didn't sell for $595.00 I accepted the highest of several offers.
So, whose advice do I follow? I don't know you guys or who to believe.
While you are at it, please go thru my other current listings and PM me what is wrong with them.

Re: C Platts & Sons Legit or Frankenknife?
Boji, in general vintage knives that have a patina and spots of oxidation on the blades usually have not been altered. Old knives with new looking shiny blades can also be all original but many will have been buffed to shiny and buffing is a way to remove evidence that the knife has been worked on and may not be all original.
