PLATTS ELEPHANT TOE
PLATTS ELEPHANT TOE
I recently inherited this knife, I"m told handed down from my late father's grandfather. Looks quite used, but still solid. One side bone handle...other side metal. I can read PLATTS SON on the blade. Can't tell if it had a 2nd blade, but doesn't look like it. Circular insert on handle has inscription 'COMPLIMENTS R. RYSE INDIANAPOLIS, IN', so I guess it was made as a promotional gift or employment award for R. Ryse. From what I've found & read about PLATTS online, I'm guessing it dates to very early 20th century, making it over 100 years old. If there might be any info you can provide in regards to this knife, I would certainly be appreciative. Do let me know if there's anything of importance I've not mentioned. Thanks

Dates from 1895-1905.Yours is a single blade easyopen. It seems to have been used hard over the years. It's had it's back handle replaced. The single blade version is scarier than the 2 blade.
I think they were given to customers since I have since a couple doxen over the years with the "R Ryse" shield.

Thank you for the response. I had wondered about the one-sided bone handle, but then we printed one-sided currency way back when. I also haven't had any luck finding info on the R. RYSE of INDINAPOLIS inscription. Knife was certainly well used. Is there any appropriate means to see if it will clean up any better? Thanks, Wayne

From what I have gathered, R.Ryse was some kind of school supply company.

That is a beautiful HOK (Honest Old Knife)!
I would be judicious and careful in cleaning it. A family heirloom like that needs to preserved, yet held often and appreciated.
But then again, I am a believer that most old knives should look old, and not overly shiny.
Your mileage may vary, just sharing my opinion.
But thank you for sharing pictures of that beauty. We love pictures here!
